Mahadai is a river of capitals
The Mahadai River has several names: Mandovi, Mhadei and is the largest in Goa and is 81 kilometers long. The Mahadai originates in the Western Ghats mountains of Karnataka and flows into the Arabian Sea.
The Mahadai connects to the second largest river in Zuari State and together they form Mormugao Harbour.
The state capital of Goa Panaji and the former capital of Old Goa are on the left bank of the Mahadai River.
The Cumbarjua Canal, which connects Mahadai with Zuari, allows ships to enter the river to export iron ore mined for many centuries in the foothills of the Western Ghats.
Part of the water flow of the Mahadai River is claimed by Karnataka. State authorities in the 2010s conducted legal proceedings to divide the waters of the river.
The river is known for its fast currents, waterfalls and scenic scenery. Various fish and reptiles are found in the waters of the Mahadai. Here you can see crocodiles, turtles or majestic white herons.
