2025: Grape harvest in Russia decreased by 4% to 870 thousand tons

The grape harvest in Russia in 2025 will amount to about 870 thousand tons, which is 4% less than the record figure for 2024 of 908 thousand tons. The area of vineyards in the country has crossed the mark of 110 thousand hectares, which is 14% higher than in 2020. Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Patrushev announced this in mid-November 2025.

He noted that this figure is slightly different from the record year 2024. Patrushev stressed that wine production is growing in Russia and in the nine months of 2025 the increase was 3%. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed confidence that the positive dynamics should continue throughout the year.

2025, the volume of grapes harvested in Russia decreased by 4%, amounting to 870 thousand tons

More than a third of Russian vineyards are at a young age, which creates good potential for further development of the industry. Patrushev said that by the end of 2025 it is planned to reach at least 5,000 hectares of new vineyards.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that 2025 was rather difficult for Russian winegrowers due to difficult weather conditions. Despite this, the industry continues to develop and expand its landing space.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the grape harvest in Russia in farms of all categories in 2024 amounted to a record 908 thousand tons. This was the maximum figure in the entire history of Russian viticulture in the modern period.

Production of still wines in 2024 increased by 8.6% to 32.6 million decaliters. The production of sparkling wines increased by 24.7% to 17.6 million decaliters, which indicates the growing popularity of this segment among Russian consumers.

The production of fortified wines increased by 29.6% to 1.1 million decaliters, and the production of cognac increased by 10.2% to 9.7 million decaliters. All segments of the wine industry are showing positive dynamics.[1]

2024: Record grape harvest - 908 thousand tons

The Ministry of Agriculture of Russia at the end of March 2025 announced the collection of a record grape harvest in 2024 in the amount of 908 thousand tons, which is 26 thousand tons (or 2.95%) higher than in 2023, when 882 thousand tons were harvested.

According to Vedomosti, the total area of vineyards in the country has reached 110.2 thousand hectares, of which 86.4 thousand hectares are in the fruiting stage. Agricultural enterprises (excluding personal subsidiary farms) in 2024 laid 7.43 thousand hectares of new vineyards.

A record grape harvest was harvested in Russia

For planting vineyards, varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were most often used. The largest increase in areas was recorded in the Republic of Crimea - an additional 2 thousand hectares and in the Krasnodar Territory - 1.9 thousand hectares of new landings.

At the same time, about 4.78 thousand tons of grapes were harvested in the Rostov region in 2024, which is almost 10% lower than in 2023. This is due to unfavorable weather conditions in the region.

Winemakers in the summer of 2024 expressed concerns about a possible reduction in the grape harvest due to weather factors. In some southern regions of Russia, May frosts were recorded, negatively affecting the growth of the vine. This was followed by an abnormally hot summer, which caused the grape harvest to begin two to three weeks ahead of schedule.

Despite the climatic difficulties, all producers noted the high quality of the harvested grapes, which should have a positive effect on the quality of the wines produced.

The total area of vineyards in Russia exceeded the forecasts of the Ministry of Agriculture, which were previously estimated at 106-107 thousand hectares. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev noted that annually the area of vineyards in the country increases by an average of 6 thousand hectares.[2]

2020: Production forecast - 21 thousand tons, imports - 275 thousand tons

According to forecasts for July 2020, the production of fresh table grapes in Russia in 2020 will remain stable at the level of 21,000 tons, and imports will reach 275,000 tons.
