The hackathon (engl. hackathon, from hack (see the hacker) and marathon — a marathon) is a format of an action with focus not on theoretical performances, and for practical work: the teams created on an action are formed by prototypes of applications within 24 hours, compete in ingenuity, skills of programming, design and data processing. Today hackathons do not belong to hacking any more, these are just programming marathons. Usually hackathons last from one day to one week.
