Iran has created an application for diagnosing coronavirus
On March 16, 2020, it became known that two weeks ago, millions of Iranians simultaneously received smartphones a notification from the Ministries of Health Iran need to establish, application allowing to diagnose. coronavirus
Dear compatriots, before going to a hospital or health center, install this program to check if you or your loved ones are infected with the coronavirus, the notification says. |
The message also contains a link to the Iranian Cafe Bazaar application store, from where you need to download the AC19 application developed by the Ministry of Health.
Of course, the application cannot diagnose coronavirus in a person. What it can truly do is collect the user's sensitive data (name, address, date of birth) and monitor his movements in real time.
After downloading to the device, the AC19 requests authentication of the phone number (although the Iranian government already controls all numbers through telecom operators), as well as permission to collect accurate location data, which is then sent to servers owned by the authorities .
Requests for permission for certain actions are part of Android, and users can accept or deny them themselves. However, the problem is that in AC19, requests are displayed in English, and most Iranian users do not understand their content, so blindly give consent. Moreover, 40% of users in Iran have older versions of Android installed on their smartphones, on which the application asks for nothing at all, but simply collects user data without their consent.
According to security researcher Nariman Gharib, the AC19 uses the Android library, usually used in fitness applications for tracking movement.
They (government - ed.) Can literally track you. If your device moves from point A to point B, they will see it in real time, "Garib said.[1] |
