Standard 802.11ad is the wireless standard which will be used for connection of the devices which are in direct visibility at rather small distances up to 10 m. The main difference of the new standard from Wi-Fi — a possibility of use of higher frequency range — 60 GHz. The new wireless standard will allow to replace hardwired connections of computer devices in some cases. In particular, use 802.11ad for connection of computers with printers, portable hard drives, monitors and other periphery is supposed.
2014: 802.11ad - Samsung accelerated Wi-Fi by 5 times
The Samsung Electronics company (Samsung Electronics Rus) announced in October, 2014 successful development of the technology capable to provide by 5 times higher data transfer rate according to the Wi-fi standard in smartphones, tablets and routers[1].
The new technology is capable to provide speed to 4.6 Gbps that is 5 times higher in comparison with 866 Mbps — the maximum speed offered by modern consumer devices. The break means that the user will be able to download the movie with a capacity of 1 GB, having spent for it less than 3 seconds whereas stream transfer of HD content without compression between devices can be made without any delays.
The technology developed by Samsung meets the IEEE 802.11ad specification and uses the frequency range of 60 GHz unlike 2.4 and 5 GHz in modern standards of Wi-fi. The specified frequency allows to get rid of an interference of communication channels regardless of what number of devices use the same network, claim in the press service of the company.
As a result it allows to approach peak values of speed as much as possible. Taking into account it, the actual speed can even be up to 10 times higher than the actual speed which is available to users in Wi-fi networks now, noted in Samsung.
So far use of the frequency of 60 GHz was impossible in the commercial market as the millimeter waves extended in limits of direct visibility badly passed through walls and quickly lost the power that led to difficulties in acceptance and to data loss.
Engineers of Samsung coped with this problem, having developed special electronic components, the modem and having created the beam antenna with a wide range. Besides, in the company developed technology of management of a beam. For providing the highest level of a signal it changes parameters of the controller of a system of 3 thousand times for every second. This allows to adapt instantly a signal at emergence on its way of obstacles.
2016: SCRF permitted use in Russia of the standard of communication of IEEE 802.11ad (WiGig)
On February 29, 2016 the Minister of Telecom and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation Nikolai Nikiforov held the regular meeting of State Radio Frequency Commission (SCRF) during which the decision on use in Russia of the frequency range of 57-66 GHz for devices of the IEEE 802.11ad (WiGig) standard was made.
The made decision makes changes to the decision of SCRF of May 7, 2007 No. 07-20-03-001 "About selection of radio frequency bands to devices of a small range".
The decision of SCRF use of the new frequency range of 5650-5850 MHz devices of the IEEE 802.11ac (Wi-fi) standard is also authorized. It will allow to use the channel to 160 MHz in buildings at deployment of Wi-fi networks of standard 802.11ac. Also for the ranges of 5150-5350 MHz and 5650-5850 MHz the power carrying capacity of radiation was twice increased. Now it is 10 MW on 1 MHz.
