IMAP

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol is the protocol of access to e-mail of the Internet) is the application layer protocol which provides access to e-mail (the similar protocol is POP3).

Content

This protocol is intended for work with incoming correspondence, gives a search capability on a key word, without saving mail in a local memory.

Functions

IMAP expands possibilities of the user in the course of work with mailboxes which are located on the central server. There is an ability to manage e-mails from the user's computer, without sending constantly files with complete contents of letters from the server and back. For departure of mail the SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol protocol - the Simple mail transfer protocol is used. The IMAP protocol carries out the work on the principle of technology of a "pseudo-local" mailbox. It means that the user can manage the box on the server so as if it is by the local machine. IMAP is a tool which allows the user to create and delete directories without problems, to perform different operations with messages: distribute them according to folders, delete or move on other server. At the same time two mailboxes on different servers are capable to be synchronized automatically that very conveniently if the user needs to store the backup copy of letters somewhere else.

Tasks

This protocol was created for work on slow channels, therefore, it perfectly will be suitable for work with modem connections, and storage of letters and folders on the server gives the chance to use one box in those places where there is an Internet. It is convenient as it is not necessary to carry with itself compact disks with the necessary letters, it is possible just to save them in the separate folder on the IMAP server.
