2024: Victory for Russian schoolchildren
Russian schoolchildren became winners of the world's first International Olympiad on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which was held from August 9 to 14, 2024 in Bulgaria. The team from Russia won gold medals and became the best among 39 participating countries.
According to CNews, the Russian team consisted of four talented schoolchildren: Nikita Kurlaev, Andrei Gritsaev, Andrei Gromyko and Anastasia Gaynulina. They took first place in the scientific tour of the Olympiad, and also received silver in the practical stage. As a result, the Russian team took first place in the overall standings. However, due to political restrictions, they did not compete under the national flag of Russia, but under the flag of the Moscow school "Letovo," whose students and graduates represented the country in competitions.
The Olympics included two main stages: a science tour and a practical part. The science tour consisted of three tasks simulating real-world scientific research in artificial intelligence. To solve them, participants needed in-depth knowledge of programming, Python libraries and the basics of machine learning. In the practical stage, the teams were engaged in developing and conducting experiments related to the behavior of AI software, such as ChatGPT and DALL·E.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko congratulated young programmers through the official Telegram channel of the Russian Government, noting that their victory was proof of a high level of training and readiness to solve the most difficult problems in the field of technology. The Ministry of Digital Development of Russia also expressed gratitude to the team and wished success at the next Olympiad in artificial intelligence, which will be held in China.
The team was trained by Central University, the first university in Russia created on the basis of a STEM model (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) with the support of such large companies as Tinkoff, Positive Technologies, VK, MTS and others.[2]
