In 1996 forces of 34 scientific institutions created Internet2, the network conceived as faster and perfect, than the Internet. Project tasks were to provide the reliable selected capacity for needs of researches and education and also development of technologies which would allow to improve the "normal" Internet.
Today observers agree in opinion that the network executed the first of these tasks: the network with the optical trunk which maximum capacity - 400 Gbps is created. 20 regional networks which provide access for more than 66 thousand organizations, including the museums, libraries, schools, the medical centers are connected to it. Thanks to Internet2 the American scientists participate in the researches performed using the Large Hadron Collider.[1]
However the second task as the chief information security officer of Harvard University Scott Bredner considers, is solved only partly: success in a number of original research projects is achieved, but part of them was vain. For example, the technologies of quality improvement of service developed in Internet2 were unnecessary when speeds of the normal Internet considerably grew.
