2024: Turkish court grants opposition complaint against canal construction project
On February 14, 2024, a Turkish court granted the opposition's complaint about a canal construction project promoted by Erdogan, which was a failure for the leader's latest megaproject.
Istanbul's opposition municipality has filed a lawsuit against the canal and the government's proposed zoning plan, arguing that it would cause irreparable damage to agricultural land, forests and water basins and worsen transport congestion. The ministry can appeal the decision.
Erdogan, who called the channel worth $15 billion his "crazy" project, sees it as an alternative to the Bosphorus Strait, arguing that it will facilitate shipping.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the construction of the canal
In June 2021, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched the construction of the 45-kilometer Istanbul Canal.
The cost of the project is $15 billion, the project will be implemented in six years.
"This is a new page in Turkey's development. This project will give a new breath for our foreign trade. Soon he will be able to recoup himself, "he said.
Construction Start Plan
In May 2021, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the Istanbul shipping channel, which should become an alternative to the Bosphorus Strait, will begin to be built at the end of June 2021.
According to Erdogan, the implementation of the project will significantly increase the geopolitical significance of the capital.
He also said that a new water artery will appear on both banks of the city, both of them will "decorate the look" of Istanbul.
