2025: Global Blood Lactic Acid Measurement Devices Market Size Exceeded $330 Million for the Year

In 2025, global sales of devices for measuring the level of lactic acid (lactate) in the blood reached $330.1 million in monetary terms. More than a third of this amount fell on the North American region. Such data are presented in a Fortune Business Insights study, the results of which are presented on March 10, 2026.

The review refers to lactometers - special devices for quickly measuring the level of lactic acid in capillary blood. Such devices are used by athletes and trainers to assess muscle endurance, determine training intensity and recovery rate, and by physicians to diagnose various conditions associated with hypoxia, shock, injury, and metabolic disorders.

The annual volume of the global market for devices for determining the concentration of lactic acid in blood has reached over $330 million

One of the drivers of the market is the growing burden of sepsis - this is a life-threatening condition caused by the acute reaction of the body's immune system to infection, which leads to organ dysfunction. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), published in 2020, 48.9 million cases of sepsis and 11 million related deaths were reported globally. Almost half (20 million) of all cases of sepsis occurred in children under the age of five. Lactate measurement is the most important diagnostic marker in sepsis, reflecting the degree of tissue hypoxia and the severity of the condition. An increase in lactic acid levels indicates tissue hypoperfusion, which is characteristic of septic shock.

Sepsis develops when the body's response to infection causes damage to its own tissues and organs, and can cause death or serious deterioration. If sepsis is not recognized at an early stage and timely treatment is not provided, it can cause septic shock, multiple organ failure and death, WHO notes.

Against the background of an increase in the number of patients with sepsis, the demand for lactometers that can produce a result in a few seconds is growing. Such devices are also widely in demand in the field of sports medicine: monitoring the level of lactate allows you to optimize the training process taking into account the individual characteristics of the athlete's body. The authors of the study cite an increasing interest in consumer biosensors as another growth factor.

On the other hand, restraining moments also stand out. Among them are named the budget deficit of medical institutions, standardization issues, the complexity of integrating new equipment into established work processes, etc.

Analysts segment the market into lactometers and consumables themselves: the latter provided the lion's share of revenue in 2025. Clinical and medical applications contribute the most, but a higher growth rate is shown by the sports and fitness application segment. From a geographical point of view, North America leads with 35.4%, or $117 million. Major industry players on a global scale are:

In 2026, the market in question is expected to reach $352.3 million. At the same time, the United States will account for $113.9 million (32.3% of global spending), Europe - $107.4 million, Asia-Pacific - $48.9 million. Latin America's contribution is estimated at $17.3 million. Fortune Business Insights analysts believe that in the future, the CAGR will be 5.4%. As a result, by 2034, costs may increase to $538 million.[1]
