2024: Sales of lancets for painless blood collection in the world for the year reached $1.09 billion

In 2024, the global lancet market for painless blood collection amounted to $1.09 billion. More than a third of global costs came from the North American region. This is stated in a study by Fortune Business Insights, the results of which were published on June 30, 2025.

Medical lancets are used to draw capillary blood. Such devices consist of a plastic case and a thin needle. Pain during the use of lancets is practically absent. These devices provide a number of advantages over traditional blood collection methods. In particular, special training is not required to use the products, and the entire procedure takes several seconds, which reduces stress for patients and increases the throughput of treatment rooms. The lancets are tuned to the optimal puncture depth, which minimizes tissue damage and eliminates human factor errors. In such devices, a special mechanism is provided that locks the needle after the first use and does not allow reuse, which eliminates the possibility of infection. Lancets with minimal puncture depth are suitable for drawing blood from babies.

The authors of the study note that the demand for lancets is growing due to the increase in the number of patients suffering from diabetes. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), from 1990 to 2022, the number of people living with diabetes increased from 200 million to 830 million people. In 2021, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths, with 47% of all diabetes-related deaths occurring among people under 70 years of age. Many patients suffering from this ailment are forced to regularly take blood samples to determine glucose levels: this contributes to increased sales of lancets.

Automatic lancets are gaining popularity, which are designed in such a way as to exclude injury during their use. In such devices, the needle is hidden in the case until use, and immediately after the blood is collected, it is automatically removed back. Product sales are growing amid the development of home diagnostics tools.

At the same time, analysts point to certain restraining factors. Despite the fact that lancets provide increased safety, painlessness and convenience, they cost more than other products for piercing the skin in order to collect capillary blood. This is a significant barrier to health facilities in developing regions where health system budgets are tight and cost-effectiveness is a priority.

Depending on the scope, the market is segmented into blood glucose monitoring, hemoglobin, cholesterol, etc. In 2024, the first of these areas provided the largest revenue. Geographically, North America leads with a share of 37.6%, or $0.41 billion. Significant players on a global scale are named:

Fortune Business Insights analysts believe that in the future, the CAGR in the market under consideration will be 11.5%. As a result, in 2025, spending on lancets will reach $1.21 billion, and by 2032 it will rise to about $2.6 billion.[1]
