2019: Approval of the standard
On February 19, 2019 the technology association on development of standards for the industry of microelectronics of JEDEC approved the new standard of RAM of Low Power Double Date Rate 5 (LPDDR5).
The new standard of memory differs from LPDDR4 in low power consumption and the increased data transfer rate. LPDDR5 will work finally with the data transfer rate of 6400 Mbps twice exceeding an indicator of LPDDR4 of first generation which was only 3200 Mbps. The last considerably will improve the speed and efficiency of different applications, including mobile computing devices, such as smartphones, tablets and ultrathin notebooks.
LPDDR5 got support of two new transactions on the basis of commands for improvement of energy consumption of a system due to data transmission reduction: Data-Copy and Write-X. The Data-Copy command instructs the LPDDR5 device to copy the data transferred on one contact of input-output on other contacts of input-output. The last eliminates need to transfer data to other contacts. Command Write-X specifies to the device to write all units or all zero to a certain address, eliminating need to send data from SoC to the LPDDR5 device. Reduction of data transfer rate using these two new commands will help to reduce the general energy consumption of a system. Besides, LPDDR5 supports the code of error correction of channel (ECC) on the interface between SoC and DRAM.
Samsung showed LPDDR5 chips in 2018, having provided two types of chips: with a speed of 6400 Mbps and of 1.1 V and also 5500 Mbps and LPDDR5 of 1.05 V. it is available to loading from the JEDEC website. The first mobile devices with RAM of LPDDR5 will appear in the market in 2019.[1]
