MP3HD

MP3HD is the sound record format developed by Thomson company, one of creators of MP3 format. Its main advantage is backward compatibility with MP3 format. Backward compatibility means that the player which does not support MP3HD will reproduce the new file as a normal MP3. It is reached rather simply: MP3HD file joins a track in MP3 format which will be recognized by a system in case of lack of codecs.

The company released the encoder allowing to convert sound files into a new format from 16-bit stereos of WAV files with a frequency of 44.1 KHZ. The plug-in which is released for a popular WinAmp player allows to reproduce these files on the computer. Both tools can be downloaded on the website devoted to a new format.

As you know, when converting music in MP3 format some parts of a sound flow are lost. It leads to quality degradation of a sound, but also reduction of file size. So, for example, the file with the bitrate of 128 Kbps takes about 10 times less places, than the original file with compact disk audio.

As well as other formats without loss of quality which treat FLAC HD-AAC and WMA Lossless, MP3HD saves initial quality of musical composition. The new format supports bitrates from 500 to 900 Kbps. The four-minute track with the bitrate of 876 Kbps occupies 26 MB. Similar files with bitrates of 786 and 605 Kbps occupy 23.5 MB and 18 MB respectively.

It is allowed to software developers and equipment manufacturers to add support of a format to the products. Under the terms of the license agreement, from each sold program decoder of Thomson company it is necessary to pay 75 cents and from $2.5 to $5 from each codec. Assignments from each sold chip with the built-in hardware support of MP3HD make $1.25, and 75 cents from each hardware codec.

According to analysts, the format can become successful only when it is accepted by the largest vendors. Up to this point, what remarkable it would not be, it it will remain only on paper.
