Action
The opera is set in the fictional city of KIN of an island in the China Sea. The prince of the Zone Zones rules there, a misogynist who, however, must marry as soon as possible if he wants to maintain his position. Italian women Agnesina and her uncle Geminiano arrive on the island after a shipwreck. Agnesina hates all men as much as Zone Zone hates women. The welcome party at the end of the first act develops into a booze. After Zon-zon rejected all the women of his homeland wishing to marry, he discovers that Agnesina is not as likable to him as the rest. So he decides to marry her. For his people to be convinced too, Geminiano must assume the role of an idol who presents it as divine will. He becomes a tangerine and marries Shunchia, one of the prince's rejected wife candidates.
First Act
A vast field on the seashore with various plantings; in the center is an altar with the idol of the patron god Ka-na-ga
Scene 1. Priest Li-lam, Mandarin Si-xing, girls Zida, Shunchiya and Kam-si and others pay homage to their patron god Ka-na-ga (Tutti: "Katomira. Ka-na-gà. Ti Kakira squaquera`). The girls chat about the fact that their prince of the Zone-zones should choose his spouse today. Everyone prays for her to become a chosen one herself.
Scene 2. Li-lam reminds Xi-sin that Zone-zones are a hardened misogynist. But if he does not marry today, he will have to cede power to his brother. Xi-sin believes that in the current circumstances he will still make a decision on time. Li-lam suggests that Zone-zones will choose their own daughter Zida (Aria Li-lam: "Quelle orecchie ben aprite ').
Scene 3. Si-sin watches an Italian ship dock after a storm, and Geminiano and his niece Agnesina come ashore (Geminiano/Agnesina duet: "Oh terra benedetta '). Like Zone Zones hates women, Agnesina hates all men. She's glad she finally got rid of her fans.
Scene 4. Xi-sin first greets the arrivals with typical country gestures. Fortunately, they can communicate, as Kibin- KIN was already visited by an Italian a few centuries ago, and Italian has been spoken at court ever since. Si-sin names his various titles and duties (aria Si-sin: "Mi dichiaro vostro amico ').
Scene 5. Geminiano advises Agnesina to abandon her dislike of men. Here, in a foreign land, she will not be good for long without her husband. But Agnesina can do nothing about her character (Aria Agnesina: "Son 'io semplice fanciulla').
Rooms in the Area Palace
Scene 6. Zone-zones with disgust looks at the list of girls ready to get married (aria of Zone-zones: "Quanti nomi in questa lista '). He would prefer to pick a bitch or a mare.
Scene 7. Li-lam reminds Zone Zones that he should announce his decision soon. Zone-zones invites the first three girls from the list to come to look at them.
Scene 8. Enter Kam-si, Zida and Syuncia (tercet: 'Zon-zon amabile'), and each presents themselves with an aria (Zida: 'Io sono, poverina' - Syuncia: 'Se cercate chi amore v'ispiri' - Kam-si: 'Se di me vi contentate'). Zone-zones rejects all three in humiliating words.
Scene 9. When Xi-sin reports the arrival of the Italians, Zone Zones happily sends the girls to receive them with all the pomp and bring them to him.
Scene 10. Li-lam, Si-xing and other courtiers introduce Geminiano, Agnesin with a large ceremony. Zone zones immediately arrange a large banquet. To this, Geminiano adds wine, which he managed to save from a shipwreck, and which is completely unknown here (aria Geminiano: "Tornado presto, sì Signore ').
Scene 11. When Zona Zona and Agnesin are alone, they immediately get into a fight, as each of them despises the other because of their gender (aria of Zona Zona: "Io vi guardo fisso in volto '). Zone zones leave the room.
Scene 12. Agnesin is annoyed that the owner of the house is a man. She would prefer a dog, ram or donkey.
Gorgeous room with cooked tables
Scene 13. Guest reception begins with a general treat that warms everyone up to the point where Zone Zones allows food to be removed to make way for trays and cold water (finale: "Le noje, e i pensieri ').
Second Act
Beautiful garden with fountains and gazebos
Scene 1. Shunchiya, Kam-si and Zayda discuss their chances with the prince. Kam-si believes that although the others are smarter and more beautiful, she is the youngest of them (Kam-si aria: "Ditemi pur fraschetta ').
Scene 2. Agnesina offers Xunchia and Zayda his friendship. However, the two distrust her and put her honesty to the test: she must say which is the most beautiful. Her cautious response that they are both equally beautiful exposes her as a liar because no woman considers the other to be beautiful (Aria Zaida: "Una donna mai non vede ').
Scene 3. Agnesina tells Suncia that in Italy, men constantly ran after women to marry them and have children. Unlike Agnesina, Suncia believes it is very beautiful (Suncia's aria: "Se fosse in Italia ').
Scene 4. Agnesina again gets into a fight with Zone-zone.
Scene 5. Geminiano breaks off the discord, pointing Agnesina to the merits of the prince. The two are outraged by this unsolicited intervention.
Scene 6. Zon-zona explains to Agnesina that his teacher called women "the most evil of all animals." Agnesina, in turn, sees tyrants in men (Agnesina's aria: "Son le donne poverine ').
Scene 7. Agnesina's response made Zone Zones think. When Li-lam and Xi-xing convince him to finally announce his choice, he demands another final hour of reflection (Zone-zone aria: "Frà mille pensieri ').
Scene 8. Li-lam and Xi-xing cannot understand the prince's behavior. C-blue such rejection of the opposite sex seems completely unnatural (C-sin aria: "La natura in sen ne ispira ').
Apartments in the Zone-Zone Palace
Scene 9. While Geminiano resents Agnesina's behavior, Zone Zones are gripped by conflicting feelings. He informs Geminiano that, oddly enough, Agnesin does not disgust him, and so he wants to marry her. However, to convince the people of choosing a stranger, they must follow the customs of the country and seek advice from the idol KIN KIN. Therefore, Geminiano must hide in the temple and announce with the voice of an idol that heaven has identified Agnesina as the prince's bride. Zone Zones have stationery with them to give appropriate instructions to the temple minister. Although Geminiano feels flattered, he has concerns. But he cannot force the Zone-Zone to entrust this assignment to someone else (Aria Geminiano: "Pria di scriver, mio Signore ').
Scene 11. Zone-zone and Agnesina take some time to cope with their feelings (aria of Agnesina: "Chi sà dirmi, poverina '). Then the Zone Zones awkwardly declares themselves to their chosen one. Agnesina hesitates. Only when the prince confesses his love to her (Zone-zone aria: "Par ch'io senta una voce nel petto ') does she delve into his urges. Zone-zones signs to their subordinates that he has made a decision.
Scene 12. Li-lam, Si-xing, Shunchiya, Zida and the people are relieved and impatient to head to the temple. Li-lam thanks heaven for not having such problems with women himself (Li-lam's aria: "Io per me ringrazio il Cielo ').
Illuminated temple with an altar in the center
Scene 13 [12] Geminiano excitedly takes his place at the idol. When the others appear (endgame: "Nume terribile '), the temple's ministers light incense that nearly strangled him. Those present are surprised to notice the idol's anxiety. Despite this, Geminiano eventually manages to proclaim an oracle. But then Li-lam calls on the temple ministers to check the veracity of the statement in the traditional way, inflicting fifty blows on the head with a stick. Geminiano runs away.
Third Act Apartments in the Prince's Palace
Scene 1. Li-lam and Xi-xing, meanwhile, uncovered the scam. But because Zone Zones was himself the mastermind, they decide to act "politically" and pretend.
Scene 2. The two inform the Twins that the oracle's spell has come true. They praise him for the resulting mandarin appointment. Geminiano promises them to fulfill this position with kindness (Aria Geminiano: "Do not doubt ').
Scene 3. Zone-zones orders the two of them to prepare a wedding feast. He forces Xunchia to go after him.
Scene 4. Zon-zon asks Xiuncia to teach his bride-to-be the art of love.
Scene 5. Xiunchia is jealous of the happier Agnesina (aria of Xiunchia: "Se la prenda, se la tenga ').

Scene 6. Before the wedding ceremony, Zida and Kam-si praise the bride, who is now dressed and decorated in Chinese (Zida/Kam-si duet: "Eviva la sposa ').
Scene 7. Shunchiya enters to teach Agnesina the'lesson' required by the Zone Zones. She advises her to be careful that Zone Zones never love anyone more than hers. When the prince comes in, she comes out with the other girls.
Scene 8. Agnesina learns from Zone Zones that a man can have as many women here as he wants. Then she breaks the promise from him to love only her one (Agnesin/Zone-Zone duet: "Se gave genio, I confess').
Scene 9. All salute the newly appointed mandarin Geminiano (chorus: "Viva viva la grandezza '). Zida states that, according to custom, no stranger should be in KIN without taking a wife. Therefore, he decided to marry Jeminiano to Xiuncia. Since they both agree, the celebration may begin (chorus: "Andiamo tutti, andiamo ').
