Modular UPSes for protection of power supply
The last years the main trend practically for any equipment of information technologies to become modularity of construction. Similar solutions allow to increase quickly a system or to reduce on the contrary at reduction of requirements. Besides, for many applications topical issue of reservation of systems due to adding of Club.CNews add-on modules: Modular construction as cost optimization method . The solutions UPS directory and projects is available on TAdviser
Now application of modular construction is most popular in no break power supply systems and the data processing centers (DPC). Use of modular UPSes for protection of power supply of important objects allowed to create a system with reservation and a possibility of further accumulation of power with the minimum costs. The systems of uninterrupted power applied earlier with reservation 2N consisting of two UPSes working in parallel were not only the bulky, but expensive solution. The similar scheme of reservation required installation of the second UPS and the accumulator bank for it that leads to doubling of costs.
The most widespread point of failure in the UPS are a power part. Therefore modern no break power supply systems of high reliability are based on modularity with reservation of N+x where x – the number of reserve modules. In one rack of the UPS integrates several power modules having the common battery bus. Such construction provides reservation of the UPSes main nodes with cost minimization.
Besides, it is simple to increase modular UPSes in process of growth of IT infrastructure of the company. At the initial stage creation of a system is established minimum necessary number of power modules about a possibility of installation of several more further. Power of no break power supply system can always be supported at the required level adding or switching-off power modules. Such approach not only reduces equipment costs and its service, but also allows to avoid an electric power overexpenditure.
In turn creation of DPC on modularity not only reduces construction expenses and ownership, but also considerably reduces project deadlines. If the cycle of preparation and construction of stationary DPC takes 1.5-2 years, then deployment of modular construction can be executed within 3 months.
It is necessary to consider one of important economic indicators of DPC – efficiency of use of the electric power (PUE – Power Usage Effectiveness). Engineering infrastructure of stationary DPC to be under construction counting upon future expansion, at the same time the value of coefficient of PUE can reach 1.7-2. So own consumption of the electric power of the engineering equipment is almost equal to costs of energy of servers. PUE values to 1.2 are characteristic of modern modular DPCs with the integrated infrastructure.
It is a huge possibility of reduction of current expenses as the share of costs for the electric power in them can reach 50%.
Technology modular DPC has important constructive advantage. Combination of all nodes from different producers to be made even at production that allows to avoid risks of possible equipment downtimes because of incompatibility. The customer receives already precollected and completely debugged solution from the supplier.
