2024: 10.7% market drop to 75.4 million

In 2023, approximately 75.4 million motherboards were delivered globally. This is 10.7% less than the previous year, when shipments were estimated at 84.4 million units. The reduction is due to the difficult macroeconomic situation, high inflation and a decrease in consumer activity. This is stated in a study by Global Information, the results of which were published in early July 2024.

In monetary terms, the volume of the motherboard market in 2023 is estimated at $12.5 billion. ATX products occupy the largest share due to their adaptability and widespread use in industrial applications. In addition, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX products are in demand. From a regional point of view, the largest market for motherboards is North America. Sales here are stimulated by a strong manufacturing sector, a high level of automation and the implementation Internet of things in various industries. In addition, the region leads in innovation and adoption of advanced technologies in many areas, including the aerospace, defense and automotive industries.

Europe, according to the report, ranks second in the ranking of the largest consumers of motherboards. There is a significant demand for modern and reliable computing solutions. The pursuit of digital transformation and Industry 4.0 is increasing demand for industrial products. In the European region, Germany in 2023 occupied the largest market share, while Britain recorded the highest growth rates. The study also said that in the Asia-Pacific region, efforts to automate and implement intelligent technologies create a favorable environment for the development of the motherboard industry. Here, China is the biggest player, with India showing the highest growth rate.

The key motherboard manufacturers are Gigabyte Technology, ASRock, Mitac Computing Technology, Asus, Super Micro Computer, Advantech, Biostar, MSI, EVGA, Shenzhen Seavo Technology, Sapphire, etc. These companies are said to be investing heavily in research and development to expand the product range. The rapid spread [[Internet of Things (of IoT)|[[Internet of Things (IoT)|the Internet of Things (IoT)]]]], including industrial, has had a significant impact on the motherboard industry. These systems often require high-performance hardware to analyze vast amounts of information. Against this background, industrial class boards are in great demand. In addition, the rapid introduction of artificial intelligence technologies contributes to the development of the industry. Cloud platform operators and hyperscalers are expanding their infrastructure by purchasing new servers.

Global Information analysts believe that in 2024, motherboard shipments on a global scale will grow by 3.9% on an annualized basis and reach 78.4 million units. In monetary terms, the volume of the industry may amount to $14.6 billion. However, the average annual growth rate in compound percentages (CAGR) until 2032 is expected to be 17.2%. As a result, by the end of the period under review, costs could reach $44.4 billion. The development of the market, according to the authors of the study, will be facilitated by the stabilization of the economic situation. Against this background, commercial customers can begin another cycle of updating the computer fleet, which will create an additional need for motherboards. [1]

2018:10% market drop to 40m

The volume of the global motherboard market in 2018 reached about 40 million units - this is how many units of products were supplied by manufacturers in total. Compared to 2017, shipments of devices decreased by more than 10%, and the negative trend may continue in the future. This was reported in January 2019 by the Taiwanese industry publication DigiTimes.

The leader in the motherboard market at the end of 2018 was the Taiwanese Asus, which released about 14-15 million products. Gigabyte Technology took the second place with a result of 10 million boards delivered, and Micro-Star International (MSI) closed the top three, selling about 6 million copies to the channel. ASRock became the fourth on the list, supplying 4 million devices. Thus, the leading group consists entirely of Taiwanese manufacturers.

Motherboard market dips 10% due to Intel processor shortage

The fall in the motherboard market in 2018 is primarily due to a decrease in the pace of computer hardware upgrades, as well as a shortage of Intel entry-level and mid-level processors. Because of this shortage, there were fewer boards entering the market than demand required.

The motherboard market is also expected to fall in 2019, but the decline will not be as strong as a year earlier, that is, by less than 10%. Asus, MSI and ASRock have a good chance of keeping hardware deliveries at 2018 levels by offering high-performance, expensive devices. At the same time, competitors including Gigabyte, Biostar Microtech International and Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) are likely to show falling sales due to the high share of entry-level products in their range.

One of the factors having a negative impact on the motherboard market at the beginning of 2019 is the weakening demand for this equipment from those engaged in the extraction of cryptocurrencies.[2]
