2024

5.6% reduction in production of string bowed musical instruments to 339 pieces

The production of string bowed musical instruments in Russia in 2024 amounted to 339 pieces, a decrease of 5.6% compared to 2023. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company Alto Consulting Group, released in October 2025.

Despite some decline in output, the string instrument segment continues to maintain important cultural and economic significance. The Volga Federal District has become a key region in terms of production, providing 67.3% of total output.

Production of string musical instruments in Russia for the year decreased by 5.6%

Causes of fall:

  • The increase in cost due to the rise in the cost of materials has become one of the main factors in the decline in production. Maple, spruce, strings and varnishes have risen in price, which has increased the costs of workshops and factories. Natural materials make up a significant share of the cost of the finished instrument.
  • The need to invest in training young craftsmen creates an additional financial burden. The transfer of manufacturing traditions requires long-term training of specialists. Workshops are forced to direct resources to educational programs while reducing graduation.
  • Fluctuations in demand affect the planning of production volumes. The dynamics of the industry in recent years shows an alternation of moderate growth and volume adjustments in response to changes in market conditions.

The musical instrument market in Russia combines elements of craft production and an industrial approach. Leading masters create instruments in demand both in educational institutions and in professional orchestras.

The concentration of production in the Volga Federal District is explained by the presence of specialized enterprises with long-term traditions. Masters pay special attention to sound quality and the use of natural materials.

The main centers for the production of musical instruments are also concentrated in the Central and Northwestern federal districts. Historical factories and workshops are located here, where tool manufacturing technologies are transferred from generation to generation.[1]

Sales of musical instruments via the Internet in Russia increased by 18% to ₽7,8 billion

In 2024, the volume of online sales of musical instruments in Russia reached ₽7,8 billion. The market growth was 18% compared to 2023. This is evidenced by the data of the analytical company Alto Consulting Group, released in October 2025.

The Central Federal District became the leader in online sales of musical instruments. It accounted for 68% of the total market volume. The high rate is explained by the developed logistics infrastructure and population concentration in the region.

Sales of musical instruments via the Internet in Russia increased to ₽7,8 billion

The growth of online sales of musical instruments is due to several factors:

  1. Increasing popularity of home music education.
  2. Develop digital platforms for learning to play instruments.
  3. Expand the range in online stores.
  4. Convenience of comparing prices and characteristics of tools online.
  5. Active development of courier delivery throughout Russia.
  6. Digital pianos and synthesizers are the most popular. There is also a growing demand for acoustic guitars and drum sets. Professional music equipment shows stable sales.

Manufacturers are expanding the range of budget models for beginners. The segment of compact tools for small apartments is developing. The supply of environmentally friendly materials in production is increasing.

Online stores are actively developing tool testing services. Customers can order delivery of multiple models for comparison. The service of online consultations with specialists is also popular.

Analysts predict further growth in online sales in 2025-2027. The market is expected to increase by 12-15% annually. New formats of digital events for musicians will develop.

The development of tool rental services is considered a promising area. Demand for second-hand musical instruments will also grow. The share of mobile learning applications will increase.[2]

Musical instrument production reaches ₽1,4 billion

The production of musical instruments in Russia in 2024 reached ₽1,4 billion. This was announced at the end of February 2025 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In the piano and piano segment, production doubled to 1,504 units.

According to Prime, citing Rosstat information, the production of piano, piano and other string keyboards brought in ₽890 million, which is 122.2% more than a year earlier. In addition, the output of accordions and similar instruments increased by 21.1% to 2081 pieces, and the volume in monetary terms amounted to ₽200 million. The production of wind organs and similar instruments reached 2297 units (in 2023 - 1934 pieces) for a total of ₽225,2 million.

Musical instrument production in Russia reached ₽1,4 billion, piano production doubled

The domestic industry of musical instruments is represented by about 120 enterprises. The production of parts and accessories for musical instruments in 2024 increased to ₽26,2 million compared to ₽23,9 million in 2023.

The increase in production is largely due to government support for the industry. The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports that the demand for domestic products is supported by orders both from the Ministry of Culture and through special programs for the purchase of musical instruments.

With regard to string bowed, plucked, wind, reed, percussion, as well as electric musical plucked and reed instruments, microphones and other types of sound equipment, there are restrictions on the implementation of state and municipal purchases of foreign analogues. The minimum shares of purchases of domestic musical instruments in the amount of 30% to 90% are also established.

An important role in the development of the industry is played by the Industrial Development Fund (EDF), which provides preferential loans to modernize and increase production. The program of the FRP "Development Projects" allows enterprises of the musical instrument industry to receive preferential borrowed financing at rates of 3% and 5% per annum and for a period of up to 5 years[3]

2021: The state spent 700 million rubles to purchase pianos for music schools and theaters

In 2021, the state spent 700 million rubles on the purchase of pianos for music schools, houses of culture, theaters and other art churches. At the same time, Russian musical instruments accounted for less than half of public procurement, the rest of the money was given for foreign ones. However, the situation may change as early as 2023. Foreign instruments, in addition to those produced in the EAEU, want to prohibit buying for state and municipal needs.
