2024: Creation of the National Supercomputer Infrastructure

In mid-April 2024, it became known about the work on the creation of the National Supercomputer Infrastructure (NSI) in Russia. The Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) believes that thanks to such a network, it will be possible to solve the problem of a multiple increase in supercomputer capacity in the country.

Earlier, Russian scientists, together with the Ministry of Education and Science, developed the concept of supercomputer infrastructure in Russia. By mid-April 2024, it is not reported at what stage of approval the document is.

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Igor Kalyaev, co-chairman of the scientific areas of the National Center for Physics and Mathematics, said in a conversation with TASS that the creation of the National Supercomputer Infrastructure will allow Russia to significantly "reduce the gap from the West in terms of providing science, education and industry with high-performance computing equipment."

The supercomputer power of individual centers can be increased, but if it does not provide access to these capacities to a wide range of users, as well as the ability to solve their tasks based on those supercomputer resources for which they are best suited, then the efficiency of investments in this area will not be so high. In order for all supercomputers of the country to be used as efficiently as possible, they must be combined into a single computing resource available to a wide range of users from science, education and industry organizations, "Kalyaev said.

According to him, by April 2024, Russia ranks 10th in the world in terms of total supercomputer capacity, behind the USA PRC,,, Japan,, Finland, and Italy. Germany France Without South Korea Brazil NSI in Russia, the availability of supercomputer resources for researchers is decreasing, the academician noted. The expert[1]
