Network Performance Management (NPM)

About relevance of a problem of performance improvement of network infrastructure and its solutions

Now practically all companies are faced by a problem of rational use of the available IT budget.

Until recently very few of the companies considered products of monitoring of network performance as candidates for expenditure. Technical specialists were offered to use the free products open source especially as many of them are popular among specialists for a long time.

The problem of shortage of network resources was always solved by expansion of channels and installation of more powerful equipment, reliability increased due to reservation of resources, performance - due to increase in their power, i.e. for the investment account in infrastructure. At the same time the organization of monitoring of work of infrastructure and applications were of secondary importance, except for issues of localization and elimination of accidents, reduction of time of unavailability of the resources (solved by implementation of the service desk systems, gradual development of use of the fault management systems).

However the increased production requirements to quality of work of network infrastructure caused by growth of video and voice traffic, virtualization, increase in mobility of users require rapid implementation of the modern performance management systems.

When it is worth spending at least half a million or one million rubles for a monitoring system of performance of network infrastructure?

Recently continues to grow quickly insistence and business users to quality of work of corporate network, first of all, in the organizations having the big geographically distributed networks influencing work of the key centralized applications, technology services, carrying out video of conferences, work of the IP telephony. Business begins to put before services of operation of the requirement for formulation and implementation of accomplishment of SLA providing the new quality level of the provided services.

The new modern systems of such class allow to provide permanent monitoring of the events in network and not only to fix problems and accidents, but also in the maximum degree to prevent them. Availability of statistics about work of components of network infrastructure gives the chance to timely reveal deviations from normal values, the arising trends, more reasonably and in details to plan investments into development of infrastructure, to control the events in all network, and not just in its separate regional fragments, to perform the functions earlier unavailable even with enough skilled staff.

Choice of the network performance management system

The choice of the correct solution network performance management (NPM) can be a difficult task, considering that set of criteria with which a system, and that a set of products which are available in the market should satisfy. Many long ago the implemented or developed systems were created in the course of acquisitions and integration of different products, evolution of opportunities of different operating systems and databases, different interfaces of users. Systems are based on the different principles, differently implementing assigned tasks. For example, there are systems which well provide time supervision of a response of applications, doing the analysis of packets of DPI, but require arrangement of tests and are badly scaled in network.

For what monitoring system of performance of network infrastructure it is worth spending at least half a million or one million rubles?

If the solution NPM is selected correctly, then costs for it quickly pay off, and it allows to solve a big circle of problems:

  • provide the powerful and convenient functionality satisfying to requirements of different divisions of IT services and be used by all of them at analysis of difficult situations
  • provide monitoring of all infrastructure with a possibility of fast connection of the appearing new object types and also fragments of infrastructure included as a result of structural conversions and expansions
  • provide automatic collecting, accumulation and the analysis of operational and historical data on all required characteristics of operation of devices and channels, taking into account traffic, using different * the protocols supported by infrastructure.
  • provide availability to required data in a type, convenient for the corresponding user
  • provide acceleration of accomplishment of troubleshooting, to react proactively to deviations of metrics from normal values
  • reveal the arising trends, have an opportunity to create forecasts of behavior for reasonable capacity planning
  • facilitate work of personnel without presentation of high requirements to its qualification, without the needs for additional resources
  • provide integration into other existing OSS systems
  • provide rapid implementation, simplicity and convenience, technological effectiveness of operation, scalability with * preserving of characteristics of performance.
