2023: Increase in the circulation of magazines on faith and religion by 4 times to 4.6 million copies
In 2023, the circulation of spiritual and educational magazines, that is, publications about faith and religion, in Russia reached 4.6 million copies. This is more than four times the figure for the previous year, when the circulation was estimated at 1.1 million units. Such data were published on February 19, 2024 by the Russian Book Chamber (RCP).
At the same time, according to the Vedomosti newspaper, the number of titles of spiritual and educational magazines in the Russian Federation on an annualized basis has slightly decreased. If in 2022 there were 77 editions of such topics, then in 2023 - 75.
The Russian magazine market as a whole (taking into account all thematic areas) in 2023 decreased by about 11.1% compared to the previous year - to 540 million copies. Gender publications showed a significant drop: for example, the circulation of magazines for women on an annualized basis decreased by 24%, reaching 24.6 million copies, while the issue of magazines for men collapsed by 54%, amounting to about 570 thousand copies. In the first case, the number of titles decreased by 25.5% compared to 2022 - to 35, and in the second, the fall was 71.4% - to two. The circulation of youth magazines fell by 80.3% to 428 thousand copies, and the number of their titles decreased by 19% to 18.
Data from the Union of Printing Industry Enterprises (GIPP) indicate that the Russian press distribution market in copies has been declining since 2010. In particular, in 2022, the fall was recorded at 37.5% compared to 2021, and the final result was approximately 500 million copies. In monetary terms, the volume of the industry decreased in 2022 by 22%, being at the level of 32 billion rubles. The fall is associated, among other things, with the reduction and even complete exclusion of printed materials from the assortment of retail chains.[1]
2022: Newspaper circulation decreased by 9% to 3.94 billion units.
According to the Russian Book Chamber (RCP) for the production of printed publications, the total annual circulation of newspapers in the Russian Federation amounted to more than 3.94 billion copies. This is 9% less than in 2021. Such data were released on February 28, 2023.
As Kommersant writes with reference to the materials of the RCP, the number of copies of magazines issued by all existing publications in 2022 amounted to 41.7 thousand, which is 3.47% less than a year earlier. The number of magazine publications decreased by 1.6%, to 6.2 thousand units, and the number of newspaper publications decreased by 5.5%, to 7.3 thousand units. The average one-time circulation of one newspaper in 2022 decreased by 10% (to 14.7 thousand units; in 2021 - by 7%).
The main reasons for the reduction in the circulation of newspapers in Russia were the withdrawal from the market of a number of large participants and the revocation of foreign licenses of magazines. Magazine revenues were affected by the departure of foreign advertisers, including carmakers. Also, many companies began to actively develop the online segment.
Some drop in retail indicators due to rising prices was compensated by subscription and growth in sales in e-commerce, - said the general director of the publishing house Lev (magazines Minecraft, Luntik, Frozen, Smeshariki, etc.) Lev Elin, emphasizing that the publishing house did not reduce circulation. |
Printing has risen in price by 30%, and paper - by 20-25%. In addition, problems for newspapers in 2022 were a decrease in distribution (a decrease in the number of kiosks) and a difficult political situation. Problems arise with sales: a trend towards a decrease in the number of press kiosks and their transfer to less accessible places, as well as a reduction in the range of press in retail, has been observed for several years, said Ruslan Novikov, general director of the Argumenty i Fakty publishing house.[2]
