Peat production, import and export in Russia

2022: Leading countries in purchasing Russian peat

In 2022, Russia exported 253 thousand tons of peat. This was reported in a BusinessStat study released in August 2023. The authors of the report refer to the data of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation, the Customs Union of the EAEU and various statistical committees of the countries.

According to BusinessStat, in 2022, China was the largest buyer of Russian peat - 55.9 thousand tons of products or 22.1% of total exports were delivered to this country. The second place in terms of peat exports from the Russian Federation was taken by the Finnish market - 18.7% of supplies (47.3 thousand tons). 34.5 thousand tons of products were exported to Germany, which corresponded to 13.6% of all shipments.

The leaders in the purchase of Russian peat in monetary terms in 2022 were Latvia, Qatar and Germany. Deliveries to Latvia accounted for 35.9% of dollar peat exports, Qatar accounted for 13.8% of all shipments abroad, and Germany - 9.5%.

A third of Russian peat is produced in the North-West region, just over 29% are produced by enterprises from the Central region, and the share of the latter increased markedly last year.

According to experts, the most promising area of peat use in Russia can be the production of products from it and sale in the domestic and foreign markets. Projects for the extraction, processing, production of peat-containing products will be of important socio-economic importance for many areas and regions of the country, since they will create additional production facilities and stabilize the labor market. In addition, the development of the industry, the delimitation of powers in the field of peat resources and the increase in the number of peat logging enterprises will increase the efficiency of control over peat bogs, which, among other things, will lead to a decrease in their fire hazard, researchers say.[1]
