2024: The number of pediatricians in Russia for the year decreased by 0.4% to 62.5 thousand people

The number of pediatricians in Russia in 2024 amounted to 62.5 thousand people, which is 0.4% less than in 2023 and reflects the first annual decrease in the number of pediatric doctors over the past five years. Despite the short-term decline, the total number of pediatricians increased slightly by 181 people or 0.3% between 2020 and 2024. This is evidenced by data from the Synopsys study, published in September 2025.

Experts analyzed structural changes in the distribution of pediatricians across different types of medical organizations. On average, over a five-year period, the number of pediatric doctors increased by 0.3% annually.

the number of pediatricians in Russia for the year decreased to 62.5 thousand people

The vast majority of pediatricians - 56.9 thousand people, or 91.0% of the total - work in state institutions of the Ministry of Health of Russia. This category of medical organizations remains the main employer for children's health care specialists.

The proportion of pediatricians in the non-governmental medical sector shows a steady upward trend during the analyzed period. In 2024, 6.3% of all children's doctors worked in private clinics against 5.5% in 2020.

The dynamics of the redistribution of personnel between sectors shows a gradual strengthening of the position of commercial medicine in the field of pediatrics. For four years, the share of non-governmental medical organizations in the total employment structure of pediatricians increased by 0.8 percentage points.

Synopsys analysts predict a continuation of a slight increase in the number of pediatricians in the next three years within 0.2% annually. The projected increase is driven by natural generational change in the medical industry.[1]
