Haredim - Ultra-Orthodox Jews

By 2022, the Israeli society is rapidly growing a layer of haredim - ultra-Orthodox families living according to strict religious canons and poorly integrated into society. Most of them live in comparative poverty, almost do not serve in the military, and according to some reports, they pay only 2% of income tax from the total population of the country.

The authorities are actively trying to involve them in labor activity, as well as involve them in the army in special battalions: partially, this even helped.

But Haredim have 6-7 children, which means that their number, like political representation, will grow more and more. By some estimates, with the current growth rate, one in four Israelis will be ultra-Orthodox by 2040.

And of course, these people do not vote for secular, left or liberal parties, but the most radical right and religious. It was thanks to a coalition with the Haredi in 2022 that Netanyahu was able to take over as prime minister of Israel for the third time.

Migration

2023: Returnees from Russia accounted for 70% of all those who came to Israel

In 2023, approximately 45 thousand new returnees arrived in Israel. For comparison, a year earlier this number was estimated at 73 thousand people. Thus, a drop of about 38% was recorded, as stated in the report of the Central Statistical Bureau of Israel, published on December 28, 2023.

The report says that the majority of repatriates in 2023 came to Israel from Russia - about 70.3%. Another 4.5% of returnees came from Ukraine, 3.8% from Belarus and 2.1% from France. It is noted that during 2022 and in the first half of 2023, the number of returnees coming to Israel was more than in previous years. One of the reasons is the current geopolitical situation. However, since September 2023, there has been a decline: this is explained by the military operation "Iron Swords" in the Gaza Strip. It is said that since the beginning of the confrontation between Israel and Hamas, that is, from October 7, 2023, almost 2,700 people have repatriated to Israel, of which the most (1,635 people) arrived from Russia.

Repatriates from the Russian Federation accounted for 70% of all those who received Israeli citizenship in 2023

The report of the Central Bureau of Statistics also said that during 2023 the population of Israel increased by 179 thousand people, which corresponds to an increase of 1.9% on an annualized basis. For comparison: in 2022, the growth rate was higher - about 2.2%. Experts believe that the decrease in the indicator is primarily due to a decrease in the number of returnees in 2023. The population increase in Israel in 2023 by 72% was due to natural growth and by 28% due to returnees.

As of the end of 2023, 9.842 million people live in Israel. Of these, 7.208 million are Jews (73.2%), and 2.08 million are Arabs (21.1%). Another 0.554 million (5.7%) are from other nationalities.[1]

2022: Repatriation of 70,000 people. More than half of them are Russians

In 2022, about 70,000 people repatriated to Israel, more than half of them from Russia. These figures are twice as high as in 2021. This is evidenced by the data of the Jewish Agency "Sokhnut," published at the end of December 2022.

The scale of the repatriation is said to have been a record for 23 years. In first place in terms of the number of citizens of Russia who moved to Israel (37,364 people), in second - Ukraine (14,680), in third - Belarus (1993).

In 2022, about 70,000 people repatriated to Israel

The repatriation from these three states accelerated especially significantly after the start of the military special operation of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine. At the same time, a quarter of those who moved were children under 18 years old, 27% - young people from 18 to 35 years old, about 20% - migrants aged 36 to 50 years, the rest - people over 50 years old.

Doron Almog, chairman of the Sokhnut agency, which helps Jewish descendants relocate to Israel, said that tens of thousands of people who repatriated to Israel in 2022 "will help strengthen Israeli society and become a significant engine of growth in the Israeli economy."

Under Israeli law, any Jew, as well as a child or grandson of a person of Jewish descent, has the right to repatriate to Israel. Those who arrived in the country receive Israeli citizenship, and family members of the repatriated also receive the opportunity to become a citizen of the country. The agency "Sokhnut" helps Jews in repatriation.

In July 2022, the Russian Ministry of Justice asked the court to liquidate the Russian representative office of Sokhnut. The ministry accused the organization of violating Russian law, without explaining what kind of claims it has. The court session has already been postponed four times: the last time - until mid-February 2023.[2]
