Postal service (Russian market)

2022: 38.6% reduction in mail transported to 1.13 million tonnes

The volume of transported mail in Russia in 2022 amounted to 1.13 million tons, which is 38.6% less than a year earlier. Speaking about the reasons for the fall in the market, BusinesStat analysts noted that high inflation and an increase in operating costs of telecom operators led to an increase in the cost of shipments. In the context of rising prices and a deterioration in the solvency of customers, the demand for postal services has decreased. The study was published in October 2023.

It follows from it that the decline in the volume of transported parcels and written correspondence in the Russian Federation in 2022 was restrained by the demand for postal services from residents of remote settlements. For some Russians, mail is almost the only type of communication available.

According to experts, in 2022, the Russian postal market left companies with foreign participation: FedEx, TNT Express, UPS. Some industry operators did not completely leave the market, but significantly reduced their activities in Russia: DHL and KNG. Cross-border trade has collapsed. The number of Internet orders has decreased and, accordingly, the volume of international shipments has decreased. However, the share of international exchange of postal services is only 0.1% of the total volume of transportation of parcels and correspondence. The restriction of activities in this direction in 2022 did not have a noticeable impact on the domestic postal services market.

According to Rosstat, by the end of 2022, there were 749 organizations in Russia, the main activity of which is "Public Postal Activity." Most postal organizations in the country are private - in 2022 their share was 87.4% of the total number of enterprises in the industry. In 2022, the number of postal vehicles decreased by 14.9%, to 19.5 thousand, which turned out to be 10.1% lower than in 2018[1]
