2023: DHL customer data leak recorded

On July 21, 2023, it became known that cybercriminals hacked DHL's information infrastructure and stole customer data from this international express cargo and document delivery company.

It is reported that the Cl0p ransomware group is behind the invasion. Attackers are exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer secure file transfer platform. The developer of this system, Progress Software Corporation, has released a fix for the hole, but the attacks continue. In particular, DHL confirmed that one of its software vendors was affected by an issue affecting MOVEit.

Upon learning of the incident, DHL promptly launched an investigation involving relevant experts to understand the scale of the consequences. This investigation continues, and we will release additional information about what happened as soon as it is available, - said representatives of the express delivery company.

As of July 24, 2023, a total of 432 companies and organizations from different countries have been affected by the vulnerability in the MOVEit platform. Attackers stole personal information about more than 23 million users. Cybercriminals use several tactics to get money from their victims. They either encrypt files and then demand a ransom for providing a cryptographic key, or threaten to publish the stolen information on the Internet. Victims of the Cl0p include many major companies including Shell Global, TomTom, Pioneer Electronics, Shutterfly, ING Bank, Sony, Siemens Energy and PWC. Financial institutions, in particular, Deutsche Bank, as well as government agencies, were affected. It is noted that the list of organizations attacked through MOVEit is replenished literally every day.[1]

The DHL Innovation Center, which is located in more than 8,500 m2, provides opportunities for DHL experts, scientists, clients and partners to meet, interact and exchange ideas. The opening ceremony was attended by more than 300 guests, including representatives of leading companies in the field of logistics and high technologies, clients from countries Northern and, South America officials and DHL management.

In the coming years, DHL will continue to invest in the development and implementation of technologies that will optimize operational processes, improve the quality of customer service, reduce operating costs and offer employees favorable working conditions.

So, the DHL Supply Chain division, which offers warehouse logistics services, has significantly increased performance, especially in the high season, with the help of robotics: using automatic vehicles that move cargo around the warehouse, mobile robots that help collect orders for online stores, and collaborative robots that are designed to help with routine tasks such as assembling and packing loads.

DHL Express will continue to implement automated solutions in regional hubs, terminals and service centers, use robotics for loading/unloading cargo, expand the field of application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimize routes, automate routine billing tasks, as well as actively use chatbots and speech recognition tools for issuing applications for courier departure, tracking orders and, in general, improving customer service.

DHL Global Forwarding, which offers expert solutions for air travel and sea freight, applies advanced technologies to track cargo and reliably transport those that require temperature compliance. In addition, the company automates warehouse processes to find the location of cargo using object identification (RFID), as well as to consolidate goods and manage the schedule of cargo transportation.

DHL eCommerce Solutions, which provides delivery services to online stores across the country and abroad, also actively uses automated solutions and robotics to improve performance in distribution centers. The company uses advanced software in order to optimize the management of customer inventory and increase the level of service to end consumers in the "last mile" of delivery.

Investing $300 million in warehouse robots

In early December 2018, DHL announced a $300 million investment in updating its warehouses by adding robots and sensors. Robotic process automation and software, which are designed to reduce delays in workflows, should help the logistics company improve the efficiency of picking orders.

By early December 2018, robots are in use at 85 DHL Supply Chain (DHL's logistics arm) facilities in North America or one in five in the region. After the implementation of the planned investment program, robotization will be used at 350 facilities or 60%.

Scott Sareddin, CEO of the North American representative office of DHL Supply Chain, told VentureBeat that the company has not yet chosen suppliers and manufacturers of robots. Negotiations are underway with the 25 largest participants in the robotics and process automation market, said Jim Gehr, president of the retail direction of DHL Supply Chain. Some DHL order centers are known to use Locus Robotics robots.

According to Jim Gera, thanks to the joint work of people with robots, the sorting of orders at DHL has been improved by 100%, and the company has not achieved such results over the past decade.

The new warehouse robots, which DHL Supply Chain is going to introduce, will be primarily used in parcel sorting operations and will be able to perform a number of tasks, from joint selection of goods with people to transporting items throughout the warehouse for subsequent processing by people.

The DHL Innovation Center for Logistics Research and Development in Chicago is scheduled to open in September 2018. It will complement previously launched similar projects  in Europe  and Asia.[2]

What technologies DHL uses for fast delivery

In mid-March 2018, it became known that the international logistics operator DHL is introducing modern technologies to speed up the delivery of parcels and increase the convenience of service for customers.

As part of a presentation in San Francisco on March 15, 2018, the company talked about the new DHL Parcel Metro service and demonstrated a variety of technologies that the courier service is already using or testing. These include virtual reality, robots and drones, eWeek reported.[3]

Speaking at the event, DHL eCommerce CEO Charles Brewer said the company is mastering new technologies as part of a digital transformation program launched in 2010. At its stands, DHL showed several autonomous robots manufactured by Locus Robotics, which are used in warehouses and allow you to speed up the movement of parcels by 50%. The robot has a tablet display, with which warehouse employees can enter the order number and issue a command to search for it.

Brewer also said that in Europe DHL uses small autonomous transporters accompanying the courier to several delivery points. This eliminates the need for the employee to return to the car and drive to the next address, as happens to postal workers.

In addition, smart glasses are being implemented in DHL warehouses, which make it easier to find and process parcels. The company also demonstrated virtual reality technology, which is planned to be used to train new staff. The system, consisting of a mobile application on a smartphone and an inexpensive VR headset, allows you to take a virtual tour of DHL objects to better understand the process of organizing order delivery.

As an experiment, DHL also tries delivery using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Drones also help DHL in managing the company's facilities.

In light of the rapidly changing needs of customers, innovative technologies are becoming an increasingly important element of online trading logistics. We use software technologies to speed up the flow of orders and more efficiently organize the work of distribution centers, and hardware solutions such as LocusBots robots allow you to find parcels faster. We strive to combine both, "said Jim Gehr, president of retail at DHL Supply Chain.

Another central theme of the March event in San Francisco was the new DHL Parcel Metro service, in which the company offers flexible and affordable delivery under the Next day delivery and Same day delivery schemes.

By March 16, 2018, the service is at a pilot stage and officially operates in three US cities: Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. DHL says it uses something like a "crowdsourcing strategy" to collaborate with local delivery and service services for online retailers. Before the end of 2018, DHL Parcel Metro is scheduled to launch in four more American cities - Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco and Washington.

The service uses a specialized application that allows you to create a "virtual courier network" from local and regional delivery services operating under a contract. This ensures maximum flexibility and efficiency of the "last mile" delivery organization, the company notes.

Using DHL Parcel Metro, online retailers can offer customers a full range of delivery options. For consumers, the service is also convenient: the online and mobile interface of the application allows you to track the parcel in real time, transmit instructions to the courier, change the time or place of delivery, as well as assess the quality of service.[4]
