2024: The largest iodine deposit in the Russian Federation was discovered in the Arkhangelsk region
In the Primorsky municipal district of the Arkhangelsk region, the largest deposit of iodine water in Russia was discovered. Governor Alexander Tsybulsky announced the discovery of the field and the start of production to President Vladimir Putin on November 26, 2024.
According to Kommersant, the field is located on the territory of the advanced development of the Capital of the North, where it is planned to create production facilities in the field of cosmetology, pharmaceuticals and the military-industrial complex.
The uniqueness of the field lies in the shallow occurrence of iodine waters - about 100 meters, while usually this figure exceeds 1 km. The reserves will last for 25 years with a planned productivity of 120 tons of iodine per year.
The governor also spoke about plans for the development of the diamond mining industry in the region. Currently, the region provides 20% of Russian diamond production, mainly jewelry quality, and plans to increase this figure to 40%.
Full production of iodine will be organized on the basis of the new deposit. Doubling productivity will significantly reduce Russia's dependence on the import of this important raw material used in medicine and industry.
The government of the Arkhangelsk region considers the development of the field as a strategically important project that can make a significant contribution to the development of the regional economy and strengthen national security in the production of critical materials. The availability of its own raw material base will ensure the stable production of the necessary drugs and medical materials.
The project also provides for the creation of new jobs and the development of related industries in the region, which will contribute to the integrated development of the Capital of the North advanced development territory.
