2016: One in four Spaniards is an atheist

One in four people in Spain is an atheist or has no religion. This is evidenced by the results of a report submitted by the Foundation Ferrer y Guardia at the end of 2016.

25.8% of the country's residents said they were not adherents of either religion. Of these, 15% called themselves unbelievers, another 10% - atheists, the rest could not decide on the answer.

72% admitted that they are adherents of any religion (of which Catholics - 69%).

Thus, the number of unbelievers in the country has grown significantly over the past decades: in 1980, only 8.5% of the population stated that they did not believe God. Most atheists and non-believers among people from 18 to 34 years old (almost 50%), among people over 65 there are only 8.3% of them.

The least believers in Catalonia (29% said they never believed in God, 13.7% admitted that they used to be believers, but changed their position), in the Basque Country and in the Balearic Islands, the least atheists - in Murcia, Aragon, Castile-La Mancha and Extremadura.

In addition, the study shows that Spaniards no longer want to marry in the church - if in 1992 there were 79.4% of church marriages, then in 2015 - 29%. The proportion of marriages registered in civil registry departments rose from 20.6% to 70.4% during the same period. Catalonia, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands were the leaders in the number of civil marriages, while Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha and Ceuta, on the contrary, took places at the opposite end of the ranking.

42.5% of children are now born out of wedlock, in 1990 - there were 9.61% of them.

The popularity of religion lessons is falling in schools. In primary school, 30.7% of students prefer alternative subjects to religious education, in secondary school - 47%, in high school - 66.5%. At the same time, in public schools, the number of those who do not want to study religions is noticeably higher compared to private ones - 60% versus 22%[1].
