2024: To curb China's influence, $90m Australia gets right to negotiate Nauru security deals
In December 2024, the Australian authorities entered into a separate agreement with Nauru.
According to the document, the Nauru authorities are obliged to consult with Canberra when concluding deals in the areas of critical infrastructure and security. Thus, Australia has the right to veto those decisions that are considered dangerous in the country.
In exchange, the authorities of the island state receive cash injections in their budget in the amount of $90 million. Australia's largest bank has also taken it upon itself to provide banking assistance in the country.
Such a decision is a reaction to the conclusion of a treaty between China and the Solomon Islands, which concerns the security and police sectors.
In Australia and the United States, they do not want to allow the expansion of Beijing's influence in fact in the backyard of Canberra, and therefore do everything possible to stop it. Especially when it comes to the emergence of Beijing's conditional military bases there.
In Nauru, since the beginning of 2024, they are no longer recognized Taiwan as a state. Earlier, the Solomon Islands also changed their position in 2019. And after a few years, the state authorities concluded the aforementioned deal with the PRC.
Perhaps, according to Canberra's calculations, the same situation could happen to Nauru, which would multiply increase Chinese influence in the region. The Australian leadership could not allow this, which is why it took such measures.
