2023: Nornickel begins development of Eurasia's deepest mine

On October 2, 2023, Norilsk Nickel announced the start of development of the deepest mine in Eurasia. The company began mining in the Glubokaya mine of the Skalisty mine at a depth of almost 2 km.

According to the press service of Norilsk Nickel, in order to ensure the start of production, the company connected two independent vertical shafts - a ventilation and a skip cage. The failure took place at a mark of 1943 meters. This made it possible to combine the necessary infrastructure of the mine and launch its "light" - general ventilation.

By the beginning of October 2023, the mine has about 60 million tons of rich ore, about 20 million tons of copper, as well as more than 200 million tons of interspersed ore. Thanks to the connection of the two mines, access was obtained to the new horizons of the Oktyabrskoye deposit, where only rich ore of more than 37 million tons was explored and confirmed.

Mine builders worked on the connection of the two shafts for three years. The first explosion was made on December 19, 2019 by specialists from Kaneks Shakhtstroy LLC. In a month, mine builders passed from 50 to 85 meters. Between the two workings, more than 2 km were covered for each horizon. According to Igor Kostenko, head of the directorate for the development of the Skalisty mine, the most difficult thing in the failure process is to do it for sure.

In total, more than 20,000 wagons of rock were repelled and delivered to the surface during the penetration process. 27,000 anchors and reinforced frames were installed to fix the new exploration work. Utilities were carried out - more than 6.5 km of pipeline was installed. As a result, it turned out to be almost perfectly even exploration production with a length of 2,269 meters with a section of more than 16.5 m ². At the next stage, mine builders will be engaged in the further development of horizons to ensure ore extraction.

By 2030, the volume of rich ore mining at the mine is planned to increase by 45%: from 2.5 million tons per year to 3.4 million tons[1]
