Seismic activity in Spain

.

Content

According to Service of civil protection for February, 2015, annually on the Iberian Peninsula from 1,200 to 1,400 episodes of seismic activity are fixed. Experts note that in Spain large earthquakes happen infrequently, however the overall level of seismic activity remains quite significant.

Specialists of National geographical Institute (IGN) made the card of 3,832 most powerful earthquakes which occurred for all history of Spain. On it the episodes which led to the most considerable destructions and damage, yellow – the earthquakes which entailed minor damage are marked in red color; green – weak and almost imperceptible, and white – those that only IGN were mentioned.

The largest earthquakes

The largest earthquakes in the history of Spain happened on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

On February 2, 1428 tremors destroyed the city of Keralbs.

In the 1748th erased from the person of the City land of Montes, Selyent and Estubeni in Valencia.

In 1829 shook to Torrevyekh and Guardamar.

In 1884 became the reason of serious destructions in municipality Arenas-del-Ray (Granada).

However, experts call similar earthquakes a rare phenomenon. Most often episodes of seismic activity are valid from 2 to 2.9 points on the Richter scale, and in a year 760 similar cases are fixed[1].

The list of the last earthquakes in Spain measuring more than 5 points on the Richter scale is included below.

April 20, 1956. Epicenter of tremors measuring 5 points was in Albolota (Granada). 12 people died, 70 were traumatized. The earthquake destroyed 500 buildings in Albolota, Atarf and Granade.

December 20, 1989. The earthquake measuring 5.3 points with epicenter in Huelva led to interruption of electrical supplies and panic among citizens and also residents of Seville.

February 2, 1999. Two earthquakes measuring 5.2 and 3.5 points on the Richter scale which weaker pushes followed, shook Murcia. 20 people were wounded.

February 12, 2007. The earthquake measuring 6.1 points with epicenter in 200 kilometers from the Portuguese cape of San-Visente was felt practically in all continental Spain and led to evacuation of buildings. It did not bring the human victims and material damage.

August 12, 2007. The earthquake measuring 5.1 points with epicenter in municipality Pedro-Munyos (Syyudad-Real) was also felt by inhabitants of almost all peninsula, in particular its central part. Nobody suffered, however as a result of incident the theater building in municipality of Almagro collapsed.

December 17, 2009. Tremors measuring 6.3 points were noticeable on the western coast of Andalusia. Their epicenter was located at a depth of 58 kilometers, in hundred kilometers from the southern part of the cape of San-Visente. Incident did not cause damage and the victims.

May 11, 2011. The earthquake measuring 5.1 points which occurred in Lorca (Murcia) claimed the lives of 9 people. 324 more were traumatized; thousands of citizens were evacuated. Epicenter was in 5 kilometers from the city. 80% of apartment houses, monuments and infrastructure facilities were destroyed. The material damage is assessed at 1.2 billion euros.

July 30, 2012. Tremors measuring 5.6 points with epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean were noticed by residents of Pontevedra, Lalin, Ferrol and Palasa-de-Ray (Lugo).

February, 2015 - the earthquake measuring 5.2 points on the Richter scale which happened in municipality of Ossa-de-Montyel (Albacete) was the strongest in Spain since 2012. The earthquake occurred on the same break of rocks, as in 2011 in Lorca (Murcia)[2].

2016: Al-Idrissi's break provokes an earthquake in the sea Alboran

On January 21, 2016 residents of the different settlements of Malaga, Almeria and Cadiz felt tremors. In spite of the fact that epicenter of an earthquake was in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea, it was well felt in continental Spain. According to National geographical Institute, force of an earthquake was 4.9 points on the Richter scale. And force of a repeated push which followed in 10 minutes after the first was already 3 points.

Residents of the Province of Malaga, especially its coastal part complained of pushes. Also disturbing messages from Almeria, Haena, Cadiz and Melilla arrived. In total the emergency service 112 received more than 70 calls.

Tectonic situation and seismicity in the sea Alboran. The system of breaks Al-Idrissi (AIFS) is represented. This system is connected with breaks of NS in Almeria in the north, and in the south with breaks of the North African area. The white star represents earthquake epicenter on January 25, 2016 of Mw 6.4.

In September, 2019 the international team of scientists under control of Institute of marine sciences submitted the report in which warned about increase in a break of Al-Idrissi in the sea Alboran which in 2016 became the earthquake reason in Barcelona.

In the report it is said that the break is still active and increases in sizes. Its length is about 100 kilometers now. "Now, when we know structure of the growing break in parts, we can predict more precisely a probable earthquake", - said to investigate institute Eulalia Grasia Mono.
