Serpukhov

2024: Obtaining the status of a science city

Serpukhov officially received the status of a science city. The corresponding decree was signed on June 19, 2024 by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. This step is a significant event for the region, since it combines the scientific potential of the Protvino and Pushchino urban districts, which were previously part of the Moscow region.

The decision to assign Serpukhov the status of a science city was supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. According to the government of the Moscow region, enterprises engaged in scientific, scientific, technical and innovative activities operate in Serpukhov. Among them are "Proton," "New Technologies," "NPO DNA-Technology" and the Institute of High Energy Physics named after A.A. Logunov Research Center "Kurchatov Institute."

The status of a science city is assigned to urban districts with high scientific and technical potential and the presence of city-forming scientific and production complexes. For the first time Protvino and Pushchino received this status in 2005 and 2008, respectively, but in 2023 they were merged with Serpukhov, which led to the loss of their status in favor of the new science city.

As the Governor of the Moscow Region Andrei Vorobyov notes, the creation of a science city in Serpukhov is a landmark project for the region aimed at concentrating and implementing breakthrough scientific ideas. He stressed that to ensure technological sovereignty, modern infrastructure is needed for innovation and practical implementation of scientific developments.
