In
2024, Russian law enforcement agencies with the help of service dogs solved 26 thousand crimes

Dog handlers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, as part of preventive measures, examined more than 1 million objects in 2024. Inspections were carried out in order to ensure public safety and prevent illegal actions.

More than 12 thousand dogs of various breeds and specializations serve in the Russian internal affairs bodies. Four-legged assistants participate in the search for criminals, surveying territories, patrolling streets and accompanying suspects.

Police lieutenant colonel, deputy head of the branch of the Rostov school of service and search dog breeding of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Alexander Kargopolov spoke about the specialization of service animals. Dogs perform tasks to search for people, weapons, narcotic substances and prosecute violators.

The most versatile and common breed in the service remains the German Shepherd. More than 70% of the official places are occupied by dogs of this breed, the representative of the department noted.

In second place in terms of numbers are Belgian Malinois. This is followed by labradors, spaniels, rottweilers and other breeds, each of which has its own characteristics of use in operational and service activities.

Service dogs work in various directions, depending on their specialization. Some animals search for people on a smell trail, pursue criminals and examine the area to find violators or instruments of crime.[1][2]
