2024: Global Synthetic Biology Market Size Reaches $14.3 Billion for the Year

In 2024, costs in the global synthetic biology market amounted to approximately $14.3 billion. More than half of this amount fell on the North American region. Such data are provided in the Fortune Business Insights review published on July 25, 2025.

Synthetic biology is a scientific field covering the design and creation of biological systems with specified properties and functions, including those that have no analogues in nature. We are talking, in particular, about the formation of an artificial genome. The development of synthetic biology is associated with one of the most ambitious tasks of mankind - to learn to reproduce life, that is, to synthesize cells and their components. For this, achievements are used in various fields of biology, mathematics, information technology, chemistry and engineering.

One of the main drivers of the market are technological innovations, including the introduction of artificial intelligence and machine learning. AI algorithms predict the behavior of gene chains with high efficiency and speed, model protein structures and reduce the number of errors associated with the human factor. The industry is positively impacted by advanced developments in DNA sequencing and editing.

Analysts cite the increasing need for personalized medicine as another factor in the growth. Synthetic biology opens up qualitatively new possibilities in terms of the use of therapeutic methods adapted to the individual genetic profiles of patients. It becomes possible to create new ways to deliver drugs, advanced antimicrobials and next-generation gene vaccines.

In addition, synthetic biology covers many other areas, including the food industry (synthesized food), power (biofuel creation), industry (advanced materials development), etc.

At the same time, the authors of the study highlight a number of restraining factors. These include ethical issues and the need for significant financial costs. There is a risk of bioterrorism, that is, the use of viruses, bacteria and other substances as biological weapons. The organization of industrial production of synthetic biology products is another serious obstacle, which is associated with the inherent complexity of biological systems and the need to form a specialized infrastructure. Processes that work well under controlled laboratory conditions often face problems such as increased contamination risk and inefficiency when scaling output.
