2021: Moscow - 14th place

As it became known in August 2021, Moscow rose to 4th place in the ranking of the best cities for startups and IT investments, which is led by the analytical agency fDi Intelligence. The Russian capital is located on the 14th line among 76 cities in Europe, ahead of Milan, Copenhagen, Prague and Frankfurt am Main. In the top 3 list, experts included London, Paris and Dublin.

The Tech Cities of the Future rating evaluates cities that have created the most favorable conditions for the development of startups and investments in technology and innovation.

Top Cities for Start-ups and IT Investments

According to the indicator "Startup Ecosystem," the Russian capital entered the top 10 of the rating, taking sixth place in this section. In addition, experts considered indicators such as "Innovation and attractiveness," "Economic potential," "Efficiency of foreign direct investment" and "Economic efficiency." The maximum number of points for each direction is 10.

London took first place in the Tech Cities of the Future 2021 ranking, and Dublin and Berlin entered the leading three. The British capital topped the list for the second year in a row. In 2020, 366 transactions were recorded there to attract foreign direct investment, and the total amount of investments attracted by London IT companies for the year reached $10.5 billion. This amount corresponds to one-fourth of the total IT funding.

According to Dun & Bradstreet, by 2021 there are more than 80 thousand companies involved in software development and the provision of IT service in London, which is almost twice as much as in any other European city included in the rating.

Moscow entered the top 10 in terms of investment attraction strategy and took sixth place. Foreign investors come to Moscow from Europe and Asia, as well as from the United States. As of January 1, 2021, the volume of accumulated foreign direct investment from Germany amounted to $7.4 billion, from France - $4.6 billion, from Finland - $4.1 billion[1]

2020: Moscow - 18th place

At the end of June 2020, fDi Intelligence magazine and the technology publication The Next Web published a rating of European cities with the highest prospects for investing in IT. Moscow is located in 18th place.

The Tech Cities of the Future study examined 76 cities that were evaluated in terms of attracting capital, having qualified employees and developing infrastructure. In addition to the general rating, certain categories are highlighted: "Economic Potential," "Innovation and Attractiveness," "Level of Foreign Direct Investment," "Startup Ecosystem" and "Profitability." 

Moscow entered the top 20 most promising cities in Europe for IT investments

In the list "Startup Ecosystem" Moscow is located on the 10th line. The metropolitan authorities noted  that such ratings indicate that Moscow's global competitiveness is growing - the city is no longer just ready for a digital future, but is among the cities that define it.

The leaders of the entire rating of cities Europe most promising for investment in technology, innovation and startups are named,, London, and Paris. Dublin Amsterdam Berlin Experts explained the first place of the British capital by a combination of capital, talent and infrastructure, which, according to them, is not equal in. To Europe London was given the first places in 5 out of 6 categories.

According to London & Partners, which are cited in the study, more unicorn technology companies (startups with a market value of more than $1 billion) appear in the UK capital than in any other European city.  Such companies include Monzo, Revolut, Deliveroo and Farfetch.

Regarding Paris, experts noted that in this metropolis there are 10 of the 500 best universities in the field of computer technology, and the number of software R&D projects in 2015-2019. turned out to be the largest[2]
