"Numbers like this are deeply concerning and we must do everything to reduce them," warns Felix Notario, a doctor at the Spanish Association of Youth Medicine (SEMA). "Adolescence is an extremely important stage in life, and teenagers are at serious risk, since it is during these years that they acquire habits and behaviors that subsequently spread to adulthood," the expert noted.
According to Notario, to combat teenage smoking, the development of special pediatric techniques is necessary, which should be applied in medical centers.
Spanish teenagers also demonstrated not the best indicators in alcohol consumption. So, "out of 20,000 minors poisoned with ethyl alcohol, 5,000 needed emergency medical care," Notario said during the V International SEMA Course, held at the capital's La Paz clinic[1].
