2020: Market leaders of telematic equipment for cars - Counterpoint Research
At the end of January 2021, Counterpoint Research market researchers published a report according to which Continental in 2020 became the first largest supplier of telematic control units (TCU) in the world. Continental accounted for 20.3% of TCU's global deliveries in 2020, followed by LG Electronics with 18.4% of the market.
TCU is a built-in on-board vehicle system that provides telecommunications services. The telematic complex for the car using satellite systems and built-in sensors collects statistics on driving and its condition in real time and transmits it to the driver.
Earlier, the global TCU sector was led by LG, but its share fell sharply from 24.5% in 2018 to 18.4% in 2020.
LG's market share is declining due to the company's strong dependence on General Motors, which has reached saturation point, said Aman Madhok, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. - Over the last few years Continental has overtaken LG thanks to new contracts. |
Harman International Industries, owned by South Korea's Samsung Electronics, took third place with a market share of 13.3%, followed by Germany's Robert Bosch with 8.3% and Japan's Denso with 7.8%.
Counterpoint Research reported that the global TCU market will continue to grow with an average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.4% during the period 2020-2025, and its value in 2025 will exceed $6.3 billion. At the same time, every fourth TCU delivered in 2025 will work on 5G. Continental, LG and Harman are expected to remain the top three suppliers in TCU's 5G market.
Falling prices for 5G control units will allow them to be introduced into middle-priced cars, and by 2025, automakers such as GM, Ford and Volkswagen will become leaders in connecting to 5G.[1] |
