Pongal is celebrated at the same time every year, at the beginning of new month of Thai according to the Tamil calendar: January 14-17. According to some information, the main celebrations fall on January 15.

On January 14, 2013 (Monday). Boagopriyatny time for holding a ritual in 2013 from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the morning on the Indian time (IST).

The Pongal festival is held 4 days:

• Bhogi - Jan 13th (Sunday) - People will segregate and discard things that are no longer useful to them on this day
• Pongal - Jan 14th (Monday) - People will worship Sun God for Good harvest in the year. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Tamil month 'Thai'
• Mattu Pongal - Jan 15th (Tuesday) - Bull and Cow will be worshiped in the house

Description

Pongal festival rituals:

People thank the Sun God for the good harvest in the year, by offering sweet named 'Pongal'. On the day of Pongal, People will rise early, take bath, wear new dress, decorate the courtyard with Kolam (Rangoli) and flowers.

At the auspicious time, People will start making 'Pongal' prasadam using rice, jaggery, ghee, tender coconut, dry fruits, cardamom etc. When the Pot used to make Pongal overflows people will shout 'Pongalo Pongal' in joy.

Vegetables, fruits, coconut, sugarcane (karumbu in tamil), turmeric and ginger saplings will be also be offered to God in a Banana leaf and Deeparadhanai will be done. Greetings, gifts will be exchanged with relatives and neighbours.

Look for the special sweet dish, pongal, which is made with rice, nuts and spices.
