Thanathoradiology

Content

Thanathoradiology is a Russian term reflecting the use of radiation methods in post-mortem diagnostics.[1]. The author of the proposed term is Doctor[2] Medical Sciences Ulyana Nikolaevna Tumanova (2020).

Thanathoradiology includes the following concepts:

  • Thanatology is a branch of theoretical and practical medicine that studies the state of the body in the final stage of the pathological process, the dynamics and mechanisms of dying, the immediate causes of death, clinical, biochemical and morphological manifestations of the gradual cessation of vital activity of the body.
  • Radiology is a branch of medicine that studies the use of radiation methods for the diagnosis (radio diagnosis) and treatment (radiotherapy) of various diseases.[3]

2022: The first guidelines in the field of thanathoradiology have been developed in Russia

Employees of the Moscow Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine have developed the first methodological recommendations in Russia in the field of post-mortem radiation imaging (thanatoradiology). The recommendations are approved by the Moscow Department of Health and can be used in practical activities.

The document contains recommendations on the methodology and procedure for performing morphological and post-mortem MRI analysis, advantages and limitations.

"For the pathologist and medical examiner, determining the exact cause of fetal death is a major and urgent issue. Post-mortem MRI analysis is the most suitable method of study in thanatoradiology due to its non-invasive nature, speed, as well as the possibility of data analysis and archiving, "said Yuri Vasiliev, director of the Central House of Artists.

The developed guidelines are intended for radiologists, pathologists, forensic experts conducting post-mortem examinations of the bodies of stillbirths and the procedure for determining the age of in utero death. More information on the document can be obtained on the website of the Interregional Thanathoradiological Society.
