UK Ukraine Cyber Programme

2022: Britain sends cyber spies to Ukraine to help

On November 1, 2022, the information portal of the UK government disclosed information about the UK Ukraine Cyber Program initiative to support Ukraine in cyberspace.

As it turns out, this program has been in effect since the beginning of 2022, but information about it has not yet been disclosed. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said that approximately £6.35 million (about $7.30 million) was spent on cyber aid to Ukraine. The program ensures the protection of the critical national infrastructure of Ukraine and public services from attacks in the network space.

Britain sent cyber spies to help Ukraine

The UK, in particular, supports Ukrainian government agencies in responding to cyber incidents, including countering malware aimed at stealing classified information. In addition, the project involves measures to restrict the access of third parties to critical IT networks in Ukraine. The money provided also went to the supply of hardware solutions and software for cyber defense in the interests of Ukraine. These are firewalls, tools to combat DDoS attacks on important public systems and other tools.

According to The Independent, the UK Ukraine Cyber Program initiative involves employees of the British special services, whose tasks include repelling cyber attacks allegedly emanating from the territory of the Russian Federation. The potential damage the hackers could have done to Ukraine would have been "very significant" without the support of British spies, it has been claimed. It is emphasized that the threat of intrusions in cyberspace remains.
