2024: 7.5% reduction in wallpaper production in Russia to 161.09 million conventional pieces

Wallpaper production in Russia in 2024 decreased by 7.5% compared to 2023 and amounted to 161.09 million conventional pieces. This was announced by the analytical company Alto Consulting Group in October 2025.

The values are calculated by company analysts based on official statistics. The decline in production came after growth in 2023. The industry has faced changes in consumer demand and market conditions.

The dynamics of wallpaper production for the period from 2021 to 2024 demonstrates uneven development. In 2021, the output was 193.10 million conventional pieces. In 2022, production declined sharply by 19.4% to 155.60 million notional pieces. The fall was the most significant during the period under review.

In 2023, production recovered and rose 12.0%, reaching 174.21 million notional pieces. Positive dynamics did not continue next year. In 2024, output again declined 7.5% to 161.09 million notional pieces.

The leader in wallpaper production in 2024 was the Central Federal District. The region provided about 39.81% of the total output. Production in the district amounted to 64.12 million conditional pieces. The concentration of production capacity in the central regions determines the structure of the industry.

The second place was taken by the Volga Federal District with a share of 37.40%. Production in the region reached 60.24 million conventional pieces. The two counties provide more than 77% of the country's total wallpaper output. The remaining federal counties produce less than a quarter of the output.

Stocks of wallpaper in industry continue to grow. By the end of 2024, the volume of reserves reached 22.71 million conditional pieces. The figure increased by 11.7% compared to the end of 2023. Inventory accumulation indicates a slowdown in product sales.

The dynamics of inventory for the period from 2020 to 2024 shows significant fluctuations. At the end of 2020, the volume was 19.24 million conditional pieces. Inventories surged 44.0% to 27.72 million notional chunks in 2021. This became the maximum value for the period under review.[1]

2022: Market decline by 20.9% to 144.2 million units

At the end of 2022, 144.2 million wallpapers and wallpaper were sold in Russia, which is 20.9% less than in 2021. This is evidenced by data from BusinesStat analysts, which were released in May 2023.

According to the researchers, the drop in sales was due to a decrease in the sale of wallpaper for finishing both residential and non-residential premises. Amid stagnant incomes, rising prices for construction work and materials, as well as general economic uncertainty, the number of real estate transactions has significantly decreased, and many Russians chose to postpone the planned repairs for the future.

In addition, the growing popularity of other residential finishing materials: paint, decorative stone and plaster, flock coating, 3D and MDF panels contributed to the decline in wallpaper sales. The decline in sales in commercial real estate was due to a decline in investment activity and a lack of funds due to high loan rates.

Against the background of difficult international logistics and economic sanctions, both imported products and wallpaper and wallpaper coatings of Russian production rose in price. In 2022, the price of sales of products increased by 10.1% compared to the previous year.

In the past few years, the share of individual housing construction has grown annually and in 2022 reached 60%, the share of MKD, on the contrary, decreased to 40%. In private homes, wallpaper wall decoration is less popular than in apartments, according to a study published in May 2023.

According to analysts, in 2023 sales of wallpaper and wallpaper in Russia will stagnate, and from 2024 - gradually recover. The growth of the market will be restrained by the growing competition of wallpaper with alternative materials for wall decoration, as well as the projected increase in the share of individual residential buildings in the total volume of housing commissioning in the country, where wall decoration with wallpaper is less popular than in apartments, experts say.[2]
