1980: Eruption of St. Helens volcano, which killed 57 people
On May 18, 1980, a catastrophic (5 points on the eruption scale) eruption of St. Helens Volcano (Washington state) occurred, in which 57 people died. The relatively large number of victims is due to the fact that the eruption was a rare type of "directed explosion" (like the eruption of the Nameless Hill in 1956).
The process of volcanic eruption and the spread of an ash cloud was filmed by photographer Robert Landsburg, who died in this eruption, but preserved the film. As a result of the eruption, the height of the volcano decreased by 400 meters.

Traffic at that moment was very weak, and the only driver of the car that ended up on the bridge managed to leave it and escape.
