2025: Start of industrial banana and papaya cultivation

An experimental project for the industrial cultivation of bananas and papaya using advanced agricultural technologies and artificial intelligence systems has been launched in Sochi. The first planting of tropical crops was carried out on the territory of a peasant farm "100 hectares" using an intelligent microclimate management system. The Novorossiysk branch of the Federal Center for Safety and Quality Assessment of Products of the Agro-Industrial Complex announced the start of the project on August 25, 2025.

According to Interfax, the production complex is deployed on an area of 600 square meters in protected soil. The greenhouse is equipped with a network of sensors for monitoring key growth parameters - air temperature and humidity, as well as automated irrigation systems.

Industrial cultivation of bananas and papaya began in Sochi

Director of the Novorossiysk branch of the COC APK Lilia Kugusheva described the initiative as an important project for the country in the field of import substitution and food security. According to her, the development of technologies for the industrial cultivation of subtropical and tropical crops in closed ground will create a new segment of the domestic agro-industrial complex.

Kugusheva noted the readiness of the center's specialists to ensure quality control and safety of future products. The agency is considering the possibility of participating in the project as a controlling body for the compliance of grown fruits with established standards.

The first harvest of exotic fruits is planned to be obtained in the winter period 2025-2026. This will allow assessing the effectiveness of the technologies used and the potential for further scaling of production in the climatic conditions of the Krasnodar Territory.

The Russian government has included bananas in the official list of agricultural products, which opens their producers to access government support measures. The decision creates the legal basis for the development of banana farming as an industry of the Russian agricultural sector.[1]
