2023: Launch of the world's largest solar farm
On November 16, 2023, the UAE commissioned the world's largest solar farm, the Al-Dafra site, which is located approximately 35 km from Abu Dhabi. The capacity of this power plant is 2 GW, which is enough to meet the energy needs of almost 200 thousand average households.
Al-Dafra is a joint project of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), French energy firm EDF Renewables and Chinese solar power plant developer JinkoPower. At the same time, TAQA owns 40% of the project, and three other partners - 20% each. The opening ceremony of the platform was attended by His Highness Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council.
The solar farm is located in the desert and covers an area of more than 20 square kilometers. In total, almost 4 million bilateral solar panels are combined. At the peak of construction, 4,500 jobs were created, and the pace of installation of solar panels reached 10 MW per day. Al-Dafra Farm will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2.4 million tons per year. The solar plant will supply electricity to Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) under an agreement signed in 2020.
With the commissioning of the new power plant, the total solar production capacity in the UAE increased to 3.2 GW. In September 2023, EWEC approached energy industry participants with a proposal to submit projects for the construction of a 1.5 GW solar farm in Al-Hazn, near Abu Dhabi. The UAE aims to increase renewable energy capacity several times by 2030, bringing it to 14 GW.[1]
