Losses of airline in 2016 reached 782 million euros.

Since 2008 the German low-cost airline finished nearly an every year at a loss. Only 2010 became an exception. But also then Air Berlin was succeeded to report with profit only due to sale of the program for often flying passengers of Etihad.

The volume of a net debt of Air Berlin for the end of 2016 was 1.2 billion euros.

2017: A help request at the regional authorities of Germany

In June, 2017 it became known that Air Berlin asked the authorities of two lands of Germany to provide it guarantees on the credits. Wrote the Spiegel edition about it. It is about lands Berlin also Northern Rhine-Westphalia.

The request for the help arrived literally in several hours after the publication of news about canceling of plans of national airline Etihad Airways of the UAE and the German tour operator of TUI on creation of joint airline. The project assumed consolidation of the belonging TUI of TUIfly low-cost airline with Niki Luftfahrt, the Austrian division of Air Berlin. For June, 2017 the Etihad airline possesses 29% of stocks of Air Berlin[1].

The national airline Etihad of the UAE constantly sponsors Germans. In December, 2016 and January, 2017 the Arab airlines selected with the German Air Berlin 300 million euros. In exchange Etihad received a share of Air Berlin in 49.8% in the Austrian airline Niki.

In the published report of Air Berlin it is specified that at the end of April, 2017 the company received the next financial aid from Etihad, namely the credit for the amount of 350 million euros. According to the plan this money should help the German low-cost airline to fulfill obligations in the next 18 months. At such development of the situation the KPMG auditor consulting firm doubts that Air Berlin will be possible to remain "in the sky".
