2021: Acquisition by Rapid7 company

Rapid7 company, the developer of products for security management of IT infrastructure, announced on February 1, 2021 acquisition of a startup of Alcide specializing in protection of Kubernetes and other systems. The VentureBeat portal reported about it.

The transaction purpose - to give to application developers for systems to virtualization an opportunity to embed instruments of security directly in applications, but not to try to close weak spots using third-party developments.

Actually, the "built-in" security, or security of by design is the most adequate development approach of any software which, however, meets much less than it would be desirable. Cloud security and security of the virtualized systems one of the most relevant directions so solutions which allow to implement the built-in protection will be in notorious demand, notes Mikhail Zaytsev, the information security expert of SEC Consult Services company.

It will allow to avoid a set of errors when developing, even in the conditions of deadlines.

The volume of the transaction was $50 million. Its fact indicates significant changes in the field of security of clouds and systems of virtualization and containerization.

In recent years Kubernetes gains popularity that, in turn, created the growing market for new types of tools on infrastructure management and its security.

Respectively, the quantity of the startups focused on this market grows. However also older companies, such as based in the 2000th Rapid7, they purchase in an expected way others developments (or developers entirely) are interested in it to adapt to the changing landscape.

Alcide Rapid7 is going to integrate developments into own solutions on protection of cloud infrastructure.

Purchase of Alcide followed other recent acquisition of Rapid7 - at the end of 2020 was announced purchase for $145 million DivvyCloud company which also deals with issues of cloud security^[1].
