History

1946-1990

The story began on September 16, 1946, a year after the war, when Alitalia was created as the Aerolinee Italiane Internazionali, funded by the Italian government and British European Airways under a 60 by 40 share scheme. The airline began operations on May 5, 1947, performing the first flight from Turin to Catania and Rome. Alitalia soon began flying to Europe, and the first intercontinental flight was opened in 1948, between Milan and South America. On October 31, 1957, Alitalia merged with Linee Aeree Italiane and was named Alitalia - Linee Aeree Italiane. By 1960, the company carried a million passengers and became the first European airline to completely pass in the era of jets. In 1947, Alitalia carried 10 thousand passengers, then in 1990 it was already 25 million passengers a year.

2021: Bankruptcy Liquidation

In mid-October 2021, the Italian airline Alitalia was liquidated due to bankruptcy. Its assets went to the new airline Italia Transport Aereo (ITA), created by the state.

Made on October 14, 2021, the last flight, from Rome to Cagliari, put an end to the 74-year history between Italy and the troubled flagship carrier Alitalia. Most employees will lose their jobs. The airline stopped selling tickets on August 25, 2021.

Since 2014, Alitalia has gone through various unsuccessful investment deals, trying to cut costs, all in the face of impending bankruptcy and union strikes. The airline continued to receive assistance from the Italian government in the form of emergency loans in violation of EU rules, and the latest blow was the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of Italy.

The largest Italian airline Alitalia filed for bankruptcy

ITA, which is wholly owned by the Italian government, will begin its work with a fleet of 52 aircraft, and by the end of 2025 they plan to increase their number to 105. The new flagship carrier will inherit only part of the Alitalia flight slots, receiving 85% of the slots from Alitalia at Milan Linate Airport and 43% of the slots in Fiumicino. From October 15, 2021, ITA will serve 44 destinations, and by 2025 their number will increase to 74.

As for 11 thousand employees of Alitalia airline, 2.8 thousand people will work in the ITA aviation division in 2021, and in 2025 their number may increase to 5.7 thousand people, hence it follows that many employees will have to look for new vacant positions.[1]
