The All-Russian research geological institute of A.P. Karpinsky (VSEGEI) is organization of Federal Agency for Subsoil Management (Rosnedra) in the field of regional geological studying of a subsoil. Primary activity of VSEGEI is providing and execution of works on the state geological mapping of the territory of the Russian Federation and its adjoining water areas, creation of the state network of reference geologic-geophysical profiles, parametrical and superdeep wells, scientific and technical ensuring exploration works, scientific, thematic and experienced and methodical works.
History
VSEGEI is a successor and the successor of traditions of the first public geological institution of Russia – the Geological committee created in St. Petersburg on January 31, 1882 by the decree of the emperor Alexander III for the purpose of systematic studying of a geological structure of Russia and also the solution of practical tasks of assessment of prospects of the territory of the country on different types of minerals.
VSEGEI bears a name of Alexander Petrovich Karpinsky who headed Geolk more than eighteen years, and during the period from 1917 to 1936 – was the first elective President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Throughout all history Institute successfully solved problems of geological studying of a subsoil, developing and carrying on scientific traditions which basis was formed by schools of sciences on regional geology and geological cartography, metalgeniuses, paleontology and a stratigraphy. In VSEGEI such scientists as F.N. Chernyshev, I.V. Mushketov, A.A. Borisyak, K.I. Bogdanovich, V.A. Obruchev, Yu.A. Bilibin, I.I. Gorsky, E.O. Pogrebitsky, N.G. Kassin, D.L. Nalivkin, I.M. Pokrovskaya, L.S. Librovich, Yu.I. Polovinkina and many others, recognized not only in our country, but also abroad worked.
Employees of Geolkoma-VSEGEI gave the evidence-based forecast and the first descriptions more than 600 fields of ore areas and provinces on four continents of Earth. 48 employees of institute received the sign "Pioneer of Fields".
VSEGEI will organize and performs works on the state geological mapping of the territory of the Russian Federation and its continental shelf in scales 1:200,000, 1:1,000,000, 1:2,500,000, 1:5,000,000. Annually in different regions of Russia more than 40 field divisions work.
As a part of the VSEGEI research and production group 2 corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 38 doctors and 160 candidates of science work. The institute incorporates scientific, methodical and laboratory and analytical divisions, highly qualified and experienced specialists in all developed directions. Much attention is paid at institute to attraction to scientific and productive activity of youth; in a postgraduate study of institute training of the qualified researchers on 8 specialties is conducted.
VSEGEI actively participates in the international cooperation Rosnedra with geological services of foreign countries, coordinates several international projects ("The atlas of geological maps of Central Asia and adjacent territories of scale 1:2,500,000", "The atlas of geological maps of the Circumpolar Arctic of scale 1:5,000,000", etc.).
VSEGEI together with Geological institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Vniiokeangeologiya institute represents Russia to the Commissions on the geological map of the World at UNESCO, participates in work of National committee of geologists of Russia and the International program of UNESCO in geosciences and geoparks. VSEGEI is a permanent participant of Intergovernmental council of the CIS countries on investigation, use and protection of a subsoil.
