2021: Rusal bought Aluminum Rheinfelden
In February 2021, Rusal announced the purchase of Aluminum Rheinfelden at a price that the companies did not disclose.
Rusal believes that Aluminum Rheinfelden's experience in the field of innovation and deep technical expertise (the company owns more than 70 patents), taking into account the extensive ties in the automotive sector, will help strengthen the position of the Russian company as a priority supplier for the international automotive industry.
Rusal said that as part of the long-term development strategy of Aluminum Rheinfelden, the company will increase alloy production to at least 30 thousand tons per year. To do this, the Russian aluminum giant intends to use innovative solutions in the segment of industrial production of low-carbon aluminum products, as well as the combined scientific and technical potential of the group.

The signed agreement was supported by the German union IG BCE. Its representative, Wolfgang Zink, expressed the hope that not only existing jobs would be preserved, but new jobs would be created.
Rusal promises to invest in research projects with Aluminum Rheinfelden aimed at creating new advanced technologies.
Since the fall of 2020, Aluminum Rheinfelden has been in bankruptcy proceedings, including due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, COVID-19 which led to a reduction in orders for the supply of aluminum to automakers.[1]
