2021: Hacking the registry, selling stolen data

In mid-October 2021, information appeared that the government database of Argentina, containing the identity card data of all citizens of the country, was stolen by a hacker, and now all stolen data can be purchased on the Internet. We are talking about the National Register of Individuals of Argentina (Registro Nacional de las Personas, RENAPER).

Argentine citizens suffered a collective data breach after a government network was hacked by a hacker who then stole all the information. As follows from official sources of the country, the entire stolen database contains information about more than 46 million citizens. The hacker reportedly sells this data in private circles, providing a potential golden vein of personal data for future exploits, various types of fraud and other illegal attacks.

Hackers hacked the register of individuals of Argentina and put up for sale the data of the entire population of the country

According to Record, the hack occurred in September 2021, and the hacker entered the Argentine RENAPER system, which stands for the National Register of Persons. The agency is reportedly an essential part of the Argentine Ministry of the Interior, whose task is to issue national identity cards to all citizens in general. The collected ID-card data is stored in a database (DB), which can be accessed by other units and agencies of the Argentine Government and serves as the basis for most government requests for personal information of citizens.

According to Record, the first evidence that someone violated RENAPER appeared in early October 2021 in one of the social networks, when a recently registered account published photos of identity cards and personal data with registration places of 44 Argentine celebrities. Among them were the identity cards of the country's president Alberto Fernandez, numerous journalists and politicians, as well as personal data of football players, such as striker Lionel Messi from the football club Paris Saint-Germain and Sergio Aguero from Barcelona.

On October 8, 2021, after publishing images and personal data on one of the social networks, the hacker also posted an ad on a well-known hacker forum, offering to find the personal data of any Argentine citizen. As soon as the local media drew attention to the data leak, the Argentine Government had to officially confirm the leak and hack.[1]
