2025: Construction of the first greenhouses in Russia for growing bananas

Andrei Platonov, General Director of the Association for the Development of Subtropical Agriculture, announced the construction of the first greenhouses in Russia for growing bananas. This became known in January 2025.

According to TASS, the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Oksana Lut confirmed the readiness of the ministry to support the production of tropical fruits on an industrial scale, subject to economic efficiency for all market participants. The harvest of bananas in greenhouses is scheduled for 2025.

The first greenhouses for growing bananas will be built in Russia

The issue of starting growing bananas in Russia has been considered by the department since November 2024 after the successful launch of a similar project in Kazakhstan. The Turkish company built a greenhouse complex there with an area of more than 5 hectares with climate control and adaptive nutrition systems, planning to reach a production capacity of 1,000 tons of products per year.

The head of the city of Nevinnomyssk, Mikhail Minenkov, announced plans to build the first large-scale complex for growing tropical crops in Russia on the territory of the advanced socio-economic development of Nevinnomyssk. The 46-hectare plot of land is designed to produce not only bananas, but also passion fruit, mangoes, avocados, almonds and pistachios.

According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, about 1.4 million tons of bananas are imported into Russia annually, with almost the entire volume coming from Ecuador. In the first ten months of 2024, the volume of imports amounted to 1.16 million tons, which is 6% less than the same period in 2023.

Associate Professor of the Financial University Petr Shcherbachenko noted that the creation of domestic banana production can reduce dependence on foreign supplies and increase the country's food security, but economic feasibility will depend on technology and investment availability.[1]
